Marcus Rashford’s run of form pushing Manchester United to Champions League places
Marcus Rashford has recovered his best version with the arrival of Erik ten Hag to the Manchester United bench.
His performances off the pitch have received better reviews than those on the pitch in recent seasons. Marcus Rashford questioned and presented alternatives to the way in which the British government managed school canteens during the hardest months of the pandemic, before being subjected to racist abuse when he missed one of the penalties that cost England the Euros. By then, his level had declined heavily, right as his team’s results worsened.
Last summer he was close to leaving his team of his childhood. Rashford, once the pearl of the side, was practically given up on. But he stayed put. And now, under the baton of Erik ten Hag, he has once again become a leader. The 25-year-old is largely to blame for the good run that has catapulted Manchester United into the Champions League spots in the league, scoring in the five games he has played after the World Cup in Qatar.
It is the triumph of the discarded. Rashford is fast again, intense again and has found the energy and self-confidence he displayed early in his professional career. He astonished everyone at a very young age with his appearances in the first team, and now he is one of the leaders. The five goals he has scored in a row helps him match the mark he recorded throughout the last season. The footballer already has thirteen goals, nine away from the 22 he achieved in 2019/20.
Rashford admits he’s going through a purple patch
“This is probably the best scoring run of my career,” explained the attacker after beating Everton in the FA Cup. He was in the spotlight again. He assisted in the first goal, Coady pushed his cross into the net, and then closed the scoring from the penalty spot. “I’m getting into good scoring positions, and if we keep creating chances, I feel like I’ll keep scoring. We want to reach the tournament finals and we want to win trophies. Hopefully we get the chance to do it.” Rashford believes in himself again.
