Marta adds another layer to her legend with Brazil triumph
Two goals from the 39-year-old secured a seventh Copa América Femenina success of her glittering career.

The history of women’s soccer in South America has long been defined by one iconic name: Marta Vieira da Silva Veiga. On Saturday she added to her legend, leading Brazil to another Copa América Femenina triumph at the age of 39.
Brazil beat Colombia on penalties at Rodrigo Paz Delgado Stadium in Ecuador, after a pulsating 4-4 draw. Marta scored twice to drag Brazil back from the brink of defeat.
Though the Brazilian legend announced her retirement in 2024 after winning 10 major titles with the national team, Marta’s passion for the game proved too strong to walk away. She returned to the pitch and helped Brazil claim yet another trophy.
With this latest triumph, Marta has now secured her seventh Copa América Femenina title, her second time lifting the trophy after a final against Colombia. Following the dramatic victory, Marta was seen consoling Colombian goalkeeper Katherine Tapia, offering words of encouragement and respect after a hard-fought match.
Marta did not start in Saturday’s final but she would be the defining force. She entered the match at a critical moment, energizing a sluggish Brazilian side and disrupting Colombia’s rhythm. Her leadership and presence instantly changed the game.
Late in stoppage time, Marta seized on a loose ball outside the box and fired a stunning volley to send the match into extra time. She struck again early in the extra period, finishing a cross from the left with her right foot to give Brazil the lead before Leicy Santos equalized for Colombia.
Though Marta missed her penalty in the shootout, Brazil ultimately prevailed. And once again Marta celebrated, adding another unforgettable chapter to her legendary career and to the story of women’s football in Brazil.
