Marta has the world on tenterhooks following cryptic message
The Brazilian’s club Orlando Pride have stated that there will be an announcement from the 39-year-old at 11am on Thursday.
Marta Viera da Silva, better known as Marta, has something to tell the world. This Thursday (at 11am ET), the Brazilian international will offer a press conference to announce the next chapter in her career. Is she finally saying goodbye to football? Will she decide to stay with Orlando Pride as she approaches the age of 39? Or will she return to her native Brazil with Corinthians desperate for her signature?
“A message from Marta. Tomorrow“, was the cryptic message that Orlando Pride posted on their social networks and that has set alarm bells ringing in the women’s game.
History maker
The Brazilian forward made NWSL history in 2024 as her Orlando Pride side bagged a historic double, winning both the NWSL Shield and Championship with the striker’s goals instrumental in both wins.
Marta is one of the most decorated players in the game with six FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year awards to her name and just last summer, she secured a silver medal with the Brazilian team at the Paris Olympics.
There are many speculating that following the NWSL double win and with the striker currently a free agent, the time could be right for the Marta to announce her retirement.
On 19 February the Alagoas native will turn 39 and it seems like a perfect time for her to bow out from the sport. If this is the case, football will bid farewell to not just ne of the greatest players of all time but an inspiration to thousands of young girls who opened the doors with everyone from the likes of Alexia, Aitana and Pernille Harder claiming that Marta was their role model and source of motivation to play the game.
