Matías Arezo reaches agreement with New York City FC

As reported by journalist César Luis Merlo, New York City Football Club are close to sealing a deal for striker Matías Arezo. Merlo reports that the Uruguayan could sign a four-year contract and the only thing that remains is agreeing on a fee with LaLiga strugglers Granada.

In the 2022 season, the 21-year-old impressed with Uruguayan side River Plate, scoring 16 goals and registering five assists. Several European clubs were keen on his services but it was Granada who eventually signed him, for €6 million. His spell in Spain has not gone exactly to plan and last season he was loaned to Uruguayan giants Peñarol.

In Uruguay, he was dubbed as the ‘new Luis Suárez’. Arezo failed to fire in Spain, but he continues to have a reputation in South America where Argentine giants River Plate tried to sign the player on loan earlier this month, however, he looks set for a move to MLS.

New life for Talles Magno

New York City want to return to the top of MLS. After a disappointing season, where with the exception of a few big names, the team failed to perform and they have now turned their attention to the transfer window to improve the current squad.

In attack, only Talles Magno was able to perform consistently last season, carrying all the scoring weight of the team, but it was not enough. The arrival of Arezo will could improve the forward line but the Brazilian is set to eventually leave the club.
