Matt Turner transfer: USMNT goalkeeper leaves Arsenal for Nottingham Forest
The 29-year-old has joined Forest on a four-year contract, leaving the Gunners one year after arriving from New England Revolution.
Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner has joined Nottingham Forest on a four-year deal.
The United States international signed for the Gunners last summer after impressing for MLS side New England Revolution. He made just seven appearances last season and the expected arrival of David Raya from Brentford would see him slip further down the pecking order.
“It feels great to be here. It’s a great challenge and a great step in my career,” Turner said of the move to Forest.
“When I heard that there was interest to bring me here, it just felt right for my family, it felt right when my agent spoke to me about it and it feels like the right move for me right now.”
Forest secured Premier League survival thanks to a late run of form last season and will hope to push on this year. Turner is expected to be the club’s number one goalkeeper this year after Dean Henderson and Keylor Navas, who were both on loan at Forest last season, returned to their parent clubs.
Turner could well be in goal when Forest start their 2023/23 campaign on 12 August with a trip to his former club, Arsenal.
Matt Turner to join USMNT teammate Ethan Horvath
With the signing of Turner, Nottingham Forest are now home to two US international goalkeepers. Colorado-born Ethan Horvath has been at the club since making the switch from Club Brugge in 2021.
Horvath has only made six appearance for Forest but spent 2022/23 season on loan to Luton Town, with whom he was first choice as they won promotion to the Premier League. He was reportedly offered to Luton on a permanent deal this summer but the Hatters opted against re-signing Horvath.
The 28-year-old has been the subject of interest from other European clubs but, for now, he remains at Nottingham Forest.
