Maxi Rodriquez: Most football fans “rooting for Messi” in Qatar
The World Cup is the one major trophy that has so far evaded the Argentina star during his career and this may be his last chance to win it.
Lionel Messi will be playing his last tournament with the Argentina national team in a World Cup, which means the end of an era. Whether you are from Argentina or are an Argentina soccer fan or not, you may find yourself rooting for them to win the World Cup in Qatar just because of Messi.
“Messi and all the soccer fans have to enjoy what they are going to see now,” said former Argentina player Maxi Rodriguez. “We as Argentines are going to want it to go the best possible way. I also think a lot of soccer fans want Argentina to be champions because of Leo.”
Now that Argentina won the Copa America in 2021, Messi is just missing one title in his professional soccer career, and that’s a World Cup championship. In the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he came very close, but lost in the finals to Germany. The 2022 World Cup will be his last chance to win with Argentina.
35-year-old Messi will be Argentina’s captain. The last Argentina team to lift the World Cup trophy was Diego Maradona’s team in 1986. Even if he doesn’t win it, Messi will go down in history as one of the best soccer players and athletes to ever take the field.
