Kylian Mbappé will undergo additional tests on Wednesday on the broken nose he suffered on Monday during France’s opening Group D victory against Austria at Euro 2024. Speaking briefly to the French Football Federation’s media team, head coach Didier Deschamps confirmed new Real Madrid attacker Mbappé would have to undergo surgery, but that he wouldn’t do so during the tournament.

“It (the collision with Austria defender Kevin Danso) was accidental,” explained Deschamps. “He’ll have more tests tomorrow (Wednesday) to see how it’s progressing. He took a heavy blow. The medical team did what they had to do to limit the damage as much as possible.

“After the tests, he’ll obviously have to have an operation, even if it won’t be immediately. This morning (Tuesday), he was already feeling a bit better, so we’ll follow him closely every day”.

Will Mbappé play for France against the Netherlands at Euro 2024?

The 25-year-old has been all but ruled out of playing against the Netherlands on Friday, although the results of Wednesday’s tests will ultimately be the deciding factor. France haven’t given up hope of their captain being available for the game in Leipzig but he will have to be given the green light by the medical team.

It seems certain that Mbappé will have surgery after Euro 2024 or once France are eliminated. The FFF will likely have more to say on the matter once the tests have been completed on Wednesday, when it will be clearer whether or not he will line up against the Dutch. Whatever happens, he should feature in the third and final group match against Poland on Tuesday 25 June.

How will Mbappé's nose surgery affect Real Madrid?

There is unlikely to be any reason for Real Madrid to worry, even if Mbappé does have surgery before linking up with his new team later in the summer. We have seen numerous examples of players continuing to play with broken noses while wearing protective masks, which Mbappé is likely to do at Euro 2024.

Although the injury usually takes several weeks to fully recover from, according to most medical experts, it shouldn’t cause Mbappé to miss much game time, perhaps with the exception of Friday’s game against the Netherlands.

The former PSG star should therefore be ready and available for Los Blancos’ first match of pre-season, which will take place against AC Milan at Soldier Field in Chicago on 31 July.
