Meet Mbappé’s ‘Dr. Miracle’

Kylian Mbappé has placed his trust in Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, one of the world’s leading specialists in knee injuries. Neymar, Ansu Fati and Karim Benzema have all done the same.

Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kun Agüero, Ansu Fati, Mouctar Diakhaby, Nabil Fekir, Karim Benzema. It is not the roster of a super team, but the list of star players who have entrusted their injured knees to Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet (Lyon, 1968). The man many in soccer call the “miracle doctor.”

His reputation across the sport has been built on an extraordinary number of highly complex procedures and successful recoveries. It explains why Mbappé turned to him, in agreement with Real Madrid’s head doctor Niko Mihic, as the French star looks for answers after an 89-day injury ordeal.

Mbappé returned from Paris with the diagnosis already delivered by Madrid’s medical staff, now reinforced by the opinion of one of the world’s foremost authorities. Sonnery-Cottet is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee ligament injuries, with an extensive résumé. He serves as an advisor to the Centre Orthopédique Santy, a FIFA-accredited medical center of excellence, and has authored more than 280 scientific publications.

His relationship with Real Madrid dates back to 2014, when he treated Benzema. That connection has only strengthened over the years and now includes Mbappé’s recent consultation.

Beyond the success of his procedures, Sonnery-Cottet is known for his close relationship with athletes, a factor that has fueled word-of-mouth recommendations among elite players. Ibrahimovic is one example. Four years ago, near the end of his career, the Swedish striker entrusted his knee to the Lyon-born surgeon. The success of that operation later led Milan to rely on Sonnery-Cottet for Ismael Bennacer’s surgery and rehabilitation.

His scientific output is also notable. Among his more than 280 publications are analyses based on the roughly 600 anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions he performs every year.

In addition to his work detailed above, Sonnery-Cottet practices at Paris’s Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where he serves as head of orthopedic surgery. He holds a specialist diploma in orthopedic surgery and completed a doctoral thesis in science at the Toulouse Doctoral School. He is also president of the French Society of Arthroscopy, a member of the European Society for Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy, part of the French Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

Figo: “Sometimes I pushed too hard…”

In Mbappé’s case, there has been no surgery, only advice, which mirrors the recommendations from Real Madrid’s medical staff: patience and caution. That is the standard approach for this type of injury, where setbacks are possible.

Luis Figo experienced that firsthand, as he explained in comments to Betfair. “Mbappé’s injury comes down to how the player really feels,” Figo said. “Whether he can take the risk or not, and whether that risk could lead to worse consequences. Everything has to be agreed with the medical staff and the coach, because every situation is different. In my case, there were times when I pushed myself and it didn’t go so well. But I did it because I wanted to be on the field and help the team and my teammates. Sometimes you make those sacrifices without knowing what might happen. And later you pay for it.”

That cautious approach is precisely the path recommended by both the “miracle doctor” and Real Madrid. The aim is to avoid serious complications, something that remains possible.

Mbappé is fully aware of the risks. At the end of the season awaits a World Cup he does not want to miss. Rodrygo, for example, will not be there. But the French striker still hopes to accelerate his return, not just to play again but to do so soon.

He has one eye on Wednesday’s first leg against Manchester City. And if that proves too soon, the goal is at least to be ready for the return.
