Megan Rapinoe recently waved goodbye to her soccer career in Gotham’s victory over OL Reign in the NWSL final. The former USWNT star suffered one of the toughest injuries of her career after rupturing her Achilles tendon just two minutes and 25 seconds into the match.

The US women’s soccer legend and international icon was unable to have the magical farewell she dreamed of after more than two decades in the game.

Successful operation for Rapinoe

In a post on Instagram, Rapinoe confirmed that the operation carried out by Dr. Martin J. O’Malley in New York had been a success. “Surgery was a success. Home, resting, being taken care of (@sbird10) thank you for all the love, well wishes and good vibes sent my way,” read the message.

After her team’s defeat in the final, she said: “I feel great about my career. I feel so lucky and so grateful to have played as long as I’ve played and to have played with the incredible players that I’ve played with.”

The 38-year-old plans to continue her social justice work and has announced another documentary that will be released soon.

No plans to coach

Rapinoe doesn’t want to become a coach now that she’s retired. The Reign are expected to announce a new ownership group by December and the club’s former forward wants to be part of helping to brand and market the team.
