Estados Unidos Update:

Major League Soccer is back after the international break ahead of the final FIFA window before the World Cup, and all eyes this weekend are on South Florida.

On Saturday, Inter Miami hosts Austin FC in a matchup that signals more than just a return to league play. It marks the beginning of a new chapter for the defending MLS champion.

A new home for Messi and Miami

Miami will be dressed for the occasion as the club officially opens the doors to its new home, Nu Stadium. Construction began in 2023, and the venue is finally ready to welcome Lionel Messi and a roster loaded with global stars.

The stadium’s debut represents a milestone moment for MLS, which continues to expand both its footprint and ambition. Nu Stadium is the first in a wave of new venues planned across the league, including NYCFC’s upcoming Etihad Park, along with future homes for Chicago Fire and the New England Revolution.

MLS doubles down on identity and growth

With Nu Stadium, MLS adds its first newly opened venue since 2023, reinforcing a league-wide push toward soccer-specific stadiums that give each club a stronger identity.

That shift has been central to MLS’s growth, as teams invest in facilities designed to elevate both the fan experience and on-field performance. The result is a league that increasingly mirrors the infrastructure standards seen across top European competitions.

Recent MLS stadium openings

Before Inter Miami’s big reveal, it had been three years since the league celebrated a new stadium opening. The last club to do so was St. Louis City SC, which launched CityPark as part of its expansion debut.

In 2022, Nashville SC opened Geodis Park, the same venue where Messi and Inter Miami captured their first trophy, winning the Leagues Cup in 2023.

The year prior saw a significant stadium boom. FC Cincinnati, the Columbus Crew, and Austin FC all unveiled new homes, TQL Stadium, Lower.com Field, and Q2 Stadium, respectively.

Looking further back, the league added several landmark venues between 2018 and 2019, including Allianz Field in Minnesota, Audi Field in Washington, D.C., and BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, home of Los Angeles FC.
