Mexican players that could make a move during the summer transfer window
Johan Vázquez and Diego Lainez top the list of Mexican players that are in search of minutes with the FIFA World Cup right around the corner.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is getting ever closer and five players from the Mexico national team are in search of minutes to help their chances of being included in the final roster that will travel to Qatar in November. Out of those players, Héctor Herrera was the first to confirm that he will join Houston Dynamo and he is set to make his debut in Major League Soccer in early July.
Let’s look at who else could be on the move...
Néstor Araujo
The defender joined La Liga side Celta de Vigo on 2018 and signed a five-year contract. Néstor Araujo made 133 league appearances and scored four goals. The Mexico international’s contract expires next summer but Celta de Vigo has communicated to him that they will not offer him a contract extension and Club América is keen on signing him for the upcoming tournament. Néstor Araujo is one signature away from returning to the Liga MX.
Johan Vásquez
The 23-year-old defender arrived in Genoa last season and quickly adapted to the Serie A. Johan Vásquez scored one goal in 27 league appearances but the team was relegated from Italy’s top tier at the end of the campaign. Vásquez is under contract with Genoa until 2026 so he was sent on loan to Cremonese, the team that will make their debut in Serie A next season.
Diego Lainez
The Mexican international has struggled to see minutes in La Liga since joining Real Betis in 2019 from Club América. Last season Diego Lainez only played a total of 134 minutes in seven league appearances and he only started once. The 22-year-old has an offer from Almería and AEK Athens and Lainez could make the switch during the summer transfer window.
Orbelín Pineda
The midfielder joined Celta de Vigo during the winter transfer window and he lacked playing time during his six months in La Liga. Orbelín Pineda played a total of 94 minutes and didn’t gain the trust of manager Eduardo Coudet. The former Cruz Azul player is aware that he needs more playing time if he wants to play in the FIFA World Cup and could return to the Liga Mx next month, with Chivas and Toluca keen on signing him.
