Mexico head into the 2023 Gold Cup with new coach Jaime Lozano at the helm. The 44-year-old took over the reins of the national team replacing Diego Cocca, who was sacked on Monday after just seven games in charge. Today, the Mexican Football Federation confirmed details of Lozano’s coaching staff - his team will comprise Ryota Nishimura and Antonio Clavero, as assistant coaches, Aníbal González as fitness trainer and Eduardo González as analyst.

Lozano selects trustworthy assistants

One of Jaime Lozano’s key men will be Japanese assistant Ryota Nishimura, whom he met while studying for his coaching license. The two men would meet later and join forces in projects at Cruz Azul, Santos Laguna, Tampico Madero, Querétaro and Necaxa. Nishimura was also the Jimmy’s right-hand man during his time charge of Mexico’s U-23 team that won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, so he also knows most of the squad that will be taking part at the Gold Cup.

Nishimura isn’t an isolated case - the rest of the coaching team also worked with Jaime Lozano during his time with Mexico’s Under-23s. Antonio Clavero also worked with Jimmy at Querétaro while Eduardo González, his tactical analyst, accompanied him at Necaxa.
