It won’t be Miguel Herrera, Ignacio Ambríz or Guillermo Almada. According to TUDN, the next head coach of the Mexico national team will be Diego Cocca, who is currently in charge of Tigres UANL. The Argentine manager has vast experience in Liga MX and won back-to-back tournaments with Atlas during the Apertura 2021 and Clausura 2022 campaigns. It is expected that the official announcement will be made this week or early next week.

In late 2021, Cocca piloted Atlas to their first Liga MX title since 1951, before Los Rojinegros retained their championship at the start of last year. As winners of both tournaments in the 2021/22 Liga MX season, the club were automatically awarded the 2022 Campeón de Campeones trophy. After a successful stint in Guadalajara, he was named as the successor to Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera at Tigres for the Clausura 2023. He has Los Felinos in third place in the standings after five fixtures.

Diego Cocca the chosen one

Per TUDN’s report, the Argentine manager will take over the Mexico national team job after his participation with Tigres in the Clausura 2023. Cocca will lead the new project and start the new World Cup cycle and an interim head coach will manage Mexico during the FIFA international break of March.

Cocca had started managing in Liga MX during the Clausura 2011, when he was appointed by Santos Laguna after head coach Rubén Omar Romano was sacked for insulting the fans following the defeat against Querétaro. In September 2011, Los Laguneros sacked Cocca due to poor results.

Cocca won his first league trophy as manager with Racing in 2014. Following that title he managed several clubs without any success, but he was gaining experience. It was not until he returned to Liga MX with Atlas that he became one of the few head coaches to win consecutive titles, and was named the best manager in 2021 and 2022.
