The Women’s World Cup 2023 is finally underway and co-hosts New Zealand brought a little bit of joy back to the nation following the horrific news of a fatal mass shooting in Auckland. Hours later in the same city, the Football Ferns saw off Norway in the opening game of the tournament thanks to Hannah Wilkinson’s goal early in the second half, which has enabled them to pass an unwanted record on to Mexico and Argentina.

New Zealand finally record Women’s World Cup win

New Zealand have been regular participants in the competition since it was founded in 1991, featuring in five of the eight editions that have been played. However, until today, they had not won a single World Cup fixture, holding the record for the team who had played most games without posting a victory (12 defeats and three draws in 15 matches).

How many Women’s World Cup matches have Mexico and Argentina played?

That tag has now passed on to Mexico and Argentina, who have both featured in three tournaments and failed to win any of the nine matches they have played. The only incredibly small crumb of comfort for El Tri is that they have managed to draw three games as opposed to La Albiceleste’s two.

Mexico and Argentina are the only two countries in the history of the Women’s World Cup that have yet to record a victory having qualified for more than one tournament.
