Mexico’s goalkeeper situation continues to spark debate as the team prepares for the 2026 World Cup. With the national team still adjusting under a new cycle, every performance between the posts is being closely scrutinized, especially when it comes to the candidates hoping to claim the starting role for El Tri.

Recent decisions by Raúl “Tala” Rangel have once again fueled discussion about his place in the race for Mexico’s starting goalkeeper job. The Chivas shot-stopper has emerged as one of the names frequently mentioned as part of the national team’s future.

Costly mistakes during the Clausura 2026

Rangel has delivered several standout performances during the Clausura 2026 tournament. At the same time, a handful of high-profile mistakes have raised concerns. Those moments have triggered fresh questions about his consistency and decision-making in crucial situations.

One of the most talked-about errors came during a match against Querétaro. Rangel failed to secure a loose ball inside the penalty area, allowing Gallos Blancos to capitalize and score.

A similar moment occurred during the Clásico Tapatío against Atlas. Attempting to clear the ball while coming off his line, the goalkeeper sent a short clearance straight to an opposing player, who quickly converted to give Atlas the opening goal.

Questions at international level

The scrutiny has not been limited to club play. Doubts also surfaced during a friendly between Mexico and Bolivia. In that match, Rangel misjudged another play while coming out of his goal. The ball ultimately struck the post instead of going in, but the sequence reinforced concerns that he still needs to sharpen his decision-making in international settings.

The race for Mexico’s No. 1 spot

Despite the criticism, Rangel’s numbers in the tournament remain competitive. He has conceded nine goals, recorded three clean sheets and produced several key saves.

Still, the competition for Mexico’s starting goalkeeper role remains wide open as the 2026 World Cup approaches. Luis Ángel Malagón, Carlos Acevedo and veteran Guillermo Ochoa are also firmly in the mix as El Tri evaluates its options for the biggest tournament on the international stage.
