Rafael Márquez is currently managing Barcelona’s youth national team as he continues to develop experience as a head coach and aspire to get bigger jobs in the near future. The former FC Barcelona legend has been linked to managing the Mexico national team lately, but he is aware that he is not ready to assume the top job just yet.

The Mexican Football Federation continues their search to appoint a new manager before the start of the new World Cup cycle and Miguel Herrera seems to be in pole position to take over the job. Now it has been reported that if the experienced manager is appointed, he will include Rafael Márquez as part of his coaching staff so that he can gain experience at the international level.

Márquez the manager of the future

“It is an idea that I’ve always thought about, to include young managers to start building their legacy and that one day they assume the job. But I would have to sit down with Rafa and maybe he’s happy where he’s at right now. Maybe he is looking to grow in his own path. So I can say I want certain people in my geocaching staff, but if they don’t want to join, then there’s nothing else I can do,” said Herrera in an interview with Mediotiempo.

Miguel Herrera had a successful stint managing the Mexico national team during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where they lost to the Netherlands in the round of 16 in penalty shootouts. The 54-year-old has over 21 years of experience coaching various clubs in Liga MX and it looks like he will now get another shot with the national team.
