Millions sign petition to get Erling Haaland kicked out of the Premier League
Manchester City’s new striker has started life in England on fire, prompting someone to suggest that as a ‘non-human’ he should be banned.
If there is one name that stands head and shoulders above the rest at the start of this Premier League season, then it is Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker has already netted 19 goals and provided three assists in the 12 games that he has worn the famous Manchester City shirt.
His goal scoring exploits are breaking records all over the place and he has opposition defenders terrified every time he steps onto the pitch both in domestic games and in the Champions League. If there was anyone who doubted his adaptation to English football, sometimes dubbed the best league in the world, then Haaland didn’t take long to erase it.
Why do people want rid of Man City’s Haaland?
As goals continued to rain in from the Norwegian’s boot, head or other appendage, nicknames for the player grew. “He is a robot, he is not a human,” they’d say. “A cyborg? A machine?” others would add. And when it came to adjectives to describe the performances week in, week out, some commentators were running out.
And it is on the back of those nicknames, that an amusing campaign began in England, with a petition being started to collect signatures of rival fans for Haaland to be kicked out of the Premier League. Why? Well, because he is clearly not a human.
This petition, obviously just some fun and actually a massive compliment to the player, was withdrawn from the page, but by that point had more than two million signatures collected (our screen grab was earlier in the campaign).
If it had been continued as a legal document, the fate of Haaland’s situation would have had to have been debated by the UK parliament, due to the laws of the country. Even if you had no interest in politics, that would have been worth listening to!
