Major League Soccer is gearing up for a landmark transformation in 2027, beginning with a short “sprint” season designed to ease the transition into a new international-aligned calendar.

The move represents one of the most significant structural changes in league history, bringing MLS in line with the global soccer schedule used across Europe and much of the rest of the world.

What the 2027 MLS “sprint” season will look like

The transitional tournament will run from February through May 2027 and feature a streamlined format.

Each team will play 14 regular-season games, facing conference opponents home and away. There will be no interconference matchups, except for a potential MLS Cup final.

Playoffs and high-stakes implications

At the end of the regular season, the top eight teams from each conference will advance to a single-elimination playoff bracket, culminating in the MLS Cup final in May.

This mini season will carry significant competitive weight. Beyond crowning a champion, it will determine qualification for major competitions, including the Concacaf Champions Cup, Leagues Cup and other domestic tournaments.

The start of a new MLS era

Following the sprint experiment, MLS will fully adopt its new calendar with the 2027-28 campaign.

That season is set to begin between July and August 2027 and conclude in May 2028, introducing a winter break from December through February. The shift aligns MLS with the traditional European schedule.

Why MLS is changing

By moving to a summer-to-spring format, MLS aims to better integrate into the global soccer ecosystem, improving competitive rhythm and reducing scheduling disconnects with international competitions.

The change signals a more structured and globally conscious league, positioning MLS for greater relevance on the world stage while reshaping how the sport is played and consumed in the United States.
