The quarter-finals of the 2024 Leagues Cup get underway on Saturday night with six MLS representatives (LAFC, Columbus Crew, Seattle Sounders, Colorado, NYCFC and Philadelphia) with just two Liga MX survivors in the shape of Mazatlan and Club America.

Reigning champions Inter Miami who have played the competition without the injured Leo Messi were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Columbus Crew, current MLS champions.

Of the eight sides in contention for a tilt at the title, The Crew, LAFC and CDMX powerhouse Club América are tipped by many as favourites to succeed The Herons and lift the trophy next week.

MLS looks to confirm dominance

The perennial comparison between the level that exists between MLS and Liga MX is becoming less and less critical in recent years as US soccer has shown an exponential growth especially at national team level but also on a domestic footing and this was apparent to see in the 2023 Leagues Cup, where the final was played between Inter Miami and Nashville.

Curiously, the bracket could pit América and Mazatlán together in a final should both Mexican sides progress but as things stand, it’s the MLS teams who are very much in control as the second edition of the tournament reaches a critical phase.
