MLS team set to sign 105-cap Mexico international

When Héctor Herrera joined the Houston Dynamo in 2022 he was immediately heralded as the biggest signing in team history. Now, after one year away, HH is closing in on a return to Houston.

Mexican outlet AM reports that a deal has been agreed after Herrera parted company with current team Toluca FC. The transfer has not yet been confirmed by the club but the Mexican international is expected to sign on a one-year deal.

Now 35 years old, Herrera is in the twilight of his career but still has the talent and the top-level experience to contribute in MLS.

Herrera first arrived in MLS after a ten-year spell in Europe, playing in the Champions League with Porto and Atletico Madrid and racking up 105 appearances for the Mexico national team.

During his first spell with the team Herrera captained Houston to the 2023 U.S. Open Cup, beating Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in the final. He was named an MLS All-Star in 2023 and 2024.

Herrera is set to rejoin a team that regressed without him in 2025. Ben Olsen’s side slumped to a 12th-placed finish in the Western Conference last year, missing out on a place in the postseason.

In a bid to retool ahead of the 2026 season, the Dynamo have already announced the arrival of forward Guilherme from Brazilian side Santos FC. The 30-year-old will join on a designated player deal, signifying a major investment from the club.
