MLS terminate Matko Milijevic’s contract with CF Montréal after amateur league incident
The attacking midfielder “engaged in conduct detrimental to the league and violated his Standard Player Agreement”, according to Major League Soccer.
Major League Soccer has announced they have terminated the contract of CF Montréal’s Matko Milijevic after discovering that the young midfielder had “engaged in conduct detrimental to the league and violated his Standard Player Agreement”.
Why did MLS terminate Milijevic’s contract?
Milijevic was caught playing in an amateur tournament in Quebec using a false name. According to MLS’s code of conduct policy, a contracted player participating in a league other than MLS is a violation of any standard contract with any club.
The league’s decision came after an investigation into reports that the 22-year-old Miami-born player had been banned for life from the amateur league for punching another player in the face.
Midfielder frozen out by Canadians amid MLS investigation
Shortly after they learned of what had transpired, Montréal acted, with coach Hernán Losada confirming that the player had been asked to stay away from the club while MLS was carrying out its investigation.
“We were made aware of the situation, and there is an open investigation into this matter. Matko will not be in training until everything is resolved,” Losada revealed.
Milijevic’s limited impact in Montréal
Milijevic, who is eligible to play for Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and the United States at international level, has featured for both the Argentinian and American youth teams, up to Under-20 level. The midfielder started his professional career with Argentinos Juniors in Buenos Aires before moving to CF Montréal in August 2021. He made 35 MLS appearances for the Canadian side, scoring two goals, but failed to become a regular starter.
