Mohamed to join Pumas: how many Argentines have coached club?
Antonio Mohamed is poised to fill the hotseat left vacant by Rafael Puente del Río, who was sacked due to Pumas’ poor form in the Clausura 2023.
Antonio Mohamed is set to be announced as Pumas’ new head coach, the Argentine replacing Rafael Puente del Río at the helm of the seven-time Mexican champions.
Mohamed out to kickstart Pumas’ Clausura
Mohamed will be tasked with steering the team out of its current crisis, with Los Felinos currently languishing in 16th position in the Clausura 2023 tournament, outside the postseason places. Having won only three times, Pumas have taken just 11 points from 12 games.
If his appointment is confirmed, Mohamed will become the fourth Argentine to lead Pumas.
Egea coached Pumas as caretaker
The first man from Argentina to coach the team was Sergio Egea, who took interim charge to after the departure of Francisco Palencia in 2017. Egea was only in the Pumas dugout for five games (four losses and a draw) before stepping aside.
Marioni fired after short Pumas tenure
In 2019, Bruno Marioni, who had worn Los Auriazules’ jersey as a player, was named Pumas boss. The Argentine oversaw 14 games (12 in the Liga MX and two in the Copa MX) before being sacked, with a record of six wins, three draws and five defeats.
Pumas almost Liga MX winners under Lillini
In 2020, Andrés Lillini then became the third Argentine to be given the Pumas job. Under his leadership, Los Universitarios reached the final of the Guardianes 2020 tournament, but missed out on the Mexican championship to Club León, who won 3-1 on aggregate.
Lillini remained in the post until the end of the Apertura 2022. He is now head coach of fellow Liga MX club Necaxa.
