Monaco 2-1 Barcelona: summary, score, goals, highlights Champions League

Monaco - Barcelona: As it happened

Substitute George Ilenikhena wins it for Monaco.

Monaco played with a one-man advantage for 80 minutes but needed a break-away goal from an 18-year-old to secure the win against Barcelona. George Ilenikhena had few touches during the game but he made his chance count, firing coolly past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to win it for the hosts.

Full time in Monaco.

The hosts were made to work for it but they saw the game out to begin their UCL campaign with a home win over Barcelona.

Final score: Monaco 2-1 Barcelona

William Gittins
90+5

Monaco take advantage of their numerical superiority and enjoy a spell of possession in the Barcelona half. The visitors can't get the ball back, they're chasing shadows.

William Gittins
90+3

The free kick is 25 yards from goal, right of centre.

It's Raphinha who steps up to take it but he curls the ball harmlessly over the crossbar. A wasted opportunity for Barcelona.

William Gittins
90+2

Good work from Raphinha on the edge of the Monaco box, skipping past Zakaria and wining his team a free kick in a dangerous position.

William Gittins
90+1

Barcelona come forward again but resort to lumping a ball in towards Ferran Torres in the box. The former Manchester City man is not the same physical presence as Lewandowski and Kohn comes out to claim easily.

William Gittins
90

The corner kick comes to nothing.

The fourth official indicates six minutes of added time at the end of the second half.

William Gittins
89

As we approach the end of the 90 minutes, Monaco win a free kick midway into the Barcelona half. Golovkin tries the chip the ball into the path of Balogun but Barcelona get men across to block his route to goal.

Corner kick to Monaco.

William Gittins
88

One final change for Barcelona. Eric Balde comes off, Ansu Fati enters the fray.

William Gittins
87

VAR decision - No penalty!

On second viewing the referee is content that Martinez actually made contact with the ball before tripping Folarin Balogun. The penalty decision is reversed.

William Gittins
86

VAR - Checking VAR decision

Hold on! The referee's had a word in his ear.

He's heading over to the screen to take a closer look at the decision.

William Gittins
85

Penalty to Monaco!

Folarin Balogun goes down in the box and the referee awards the foul!

Inigo Martinez was a little clumsy but that looked harsh on the Barcelona man.

William Gittins
83

One final change for Hansi Flick. Pablo Torre comes on for Pedri.

William Gittins
83

Alex Balde, now playing as a left winger, pounces on a loose ball in the midfield and tries to drive forward but he's quickly muscled out by recovering defenders.

William Gittins
81

Top save from Ter Stegen.

That could have made it safe for the hosts. Barcelona were sleeping at the back and Balogun found space for a shot. The Barca keeper does well to tip it wide of the post.

William Gittins
79

Triple change for Barcelona.

Yamal, Cubarsi and Lewandowski are off. Gerard Martin, Dominguez and Ferran Torres come on.

William Gittins
77

Good ball over the top from Monaco finds Balogun running in behind. He finds himself in a good crossing position but the deliver is poor, straight into the grateful arms of Ter Stegen.

William Gittins
76

Inago Martinez

On second viewing, Martinez simply shoved the Monaco defender in frustration after the cross was cleared. An easy booking.

William Gittins
75

Man down in the Monaco box!

It looks like there was a coming together between Martinez and WIlfried Singo in the box. Not sure what happened exactly but Monaco players aren't happy about it.

William Gittins
74

Lamine Yamal is clipped on the right and wins a free kick for his team. It's clipped into the box but Monaco clear the ball well.

William Gittins
73

After a spirited performance for 60 minutes with ten men, Barcelona need to come out and take the game to Monaco now. Hansi Flick still has substitutes at his disposal, will be be tempted to bring on Ansu Fati?

William Gittins
72

GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLL! George Ilenikhena

A simple long ball over the top finds the Monaco substitute running through on goal and he fires confidently past Ter Stegen. Monaco retake the lead!

William Gittins
70

Another double change, with Minamino and Ben Seghir coming off. Caio Henrique and Folarin Balogun come on for the hosts.

William Gittins
68

Barcelona do well to launch a swift counter-attack but the move breaks down as Raphinha tries an overly-ambitious cross-field pass towards Kounde.

William Gittins
66

Good work from George Ilenikhena for Monaco. Holding up a long ball forward and making space for a shot with a neat touch inside.

His effort is off-target and the assistant's flag is now up, but it was promising play from the substitute.

William Gittins
65

A string of corner kicks for Monaco are well dealt with by Barcelona, keeping the hosts at bay.

William Gittins
63

Robert Lewandowski has looked increasingly isolated as this game has worn on. With Barcelona down to ten men, you wonder if they'd be better served by a more mobile option leading the line.

William Gittins
62

Good work from Pedri in the midfield to bring his team up the field and find Yamal on the right. The youngster loses the ball but Pedri flies in and wins it back.

Dynamic performance from Pedri in the opening hour of action.

William Gittins
59

Breel Embolo comes off for Monaco. George Ilenikhena comes on in his place.

William Gittins
57

Goalscorer Akliouche tries his luck from the edge of the box and draws a fine save from Ter Stegen in the Barcelona goal.

Monaco win the corner kick but Ter Stegen claims that too.

William Gittins
54

With the addition of Golovkin at the break Monaco are now playing with five attacking players across the frontline. It's ambitious, but it's crowding the space around the Barcelona penalty box.

William Gittins
52

Brilliant goalkeeping from Philippe Kohn.

Barcelona spring a counter-attack with a long ball over the top to Raphinha. The Brazilian races through on goal but Monaco keeper Kohn charges out to make a perfect sliding tackle and clear the danger.

William Gittins
51

Barcelona switch the ball quickly to find Yamal on the right. He's one-on-one but Vanderson does well to stick with him, eventually winning the ball back for his team.

William Gittins
50

Good defensive work from Pedri, hassling Ben Seghir and forcing the ball out of play on the flank.

William Gittins
49

Monaco are looking to pin Barcelona back now, managing to dominate the ball in the opening stages of the second half. This is the type of control that they lost before the break.

William Gittins
47

Promising start from Monaco with plenty of early touches for Golovin.

The hosts win a corner kick. It's played short and eventually cleared by Barcelona.

William Gittins
45

Just one change at the break. Monaco take off midfielder Camara, replacing him with the more offensive Aleksander Golovin.

William Gittins
45

And we're off!

Monaco get the second half underway...

William Gittins

The teams are out!

We're nearly ready for the start of the second half in Monaco.

Tonight's goal is another milestone in the incredible career of Lamine Yamal. The Barcelona sensation holds a whole host of records for his team and the Spanish national side.

Here's a closer look../

Lamine Yamal's incredible records

William Gittins

First of many for Lamine Yamal.

There were plenty of chances for Monaco in the opening 45 minutes but Barcelona 's Lamine Yamal needed just one to level the scores.

In fact, it was even a chance. The 17-year-old muscled Vanderson off a long ball, cut inside another challenge and fired home from the edge of the box. A brilliant first UCL goal for the youngster.

Half time. Monaco 1-1 Barcelona.

All square at Stade Louis II after an action packed first half.

William Gittins
45

Takumi Minamino take aim again from the edge of the box. Again, it's Pau Cubarsi who slides in to block the effort.

The young defender has been very good for Barcelona so far.

William Gittins
45

We're going to have two minutes of added time at Stade Louis II.

William Gittins
44

So close to a second for Monaco.

Camara curls in a deep free kick from the left, a brilliant teasing ball across the face of goal. Two Monaco player slide in but neither can reach it.

The ball bounces out for a goal kick.

William Gittins
43

Now Ben Seghir gets revenge on Kounde, skipping past the full-back and winning his team a free kick.

William Gittins
42

Good defending from Kounde to stop the progress of Ben Seghir on the flank and win his team a throw-in.

William Gittins
40

With five minutes to go there's not much to choose between the two teams. Monaco have the extra man and are enjoying more of the ball, but Barcelona's attacking talent has shown its potency in the first half.

It's all to play for.

William Gittins
39

Lamine Yamal is caught late by Vanderson by the touchline. That'll be a free kick to Barcelona.

William Gittins
38

Monaco have let Barcelona get back into the game here, failing to control the game with their one-man advantage. Hansi Flick will be fairly happy with how his side have weathered the storm in the first half

William Gittins
37

Takumi Minamino works some space in the Barcelona box and fires at goal. It's well-struck but his effort flies into the side netting.

William Gittins
35

Camara

The Monaco man is booked for a mistimed challenge in the middle.

William Gittins
34

Monaco win a free kick on the left and curl it into the middle. The ball is poked home from close range but the assistant's flag is up. The goal will not stand.

Still 1-1.

William Gittins
33

Sharp movement from Embolo makes space for a shot on goal but Cubarsi comes across to block his effort at the last second.

More good defending from Cubarsi. He may have to do a lot of that this evening.

William Gittins
31

Mix-up at the back for Monaco.

Barcelona come forward with Raphinha on the left. He whips in a low cross that causes chaos in the Monaco backline, nearly creating a golden chance for Lewandowski.

The hosts manage to scramble the ball clear.

William Gittins
30

It was completely against the run of play but that goal has clarified the job at hand for Barcelona. Sit deep, defend well, and let the attacking quality show on the break.

William Gittins

A long ball was punted forward towards Yamal. He muscled Vanderson off the ball and turned towards goal. Skipping past two Monaco defenders, Yamal made space for a shot and fired low past Kohn from the edge of the box.

William Gittins
27

GOOOOOOAAAAAAAL! Lamine Yamal

They've been outplayed for 27 minutes but Barcelona are level thanks to a stunning solo goal from Lamine Yamal! An incredible striek from the 17-year-old.

All square!

William Gittins
25

Barcelona lose the ball again trying to play out for the back. A round of applause form the home support as Monaco prepare to mount another attack.

Hansi Flick needs to change something here.

William Gittins
22

Monaco get forward again and swing in a dangerous cross from the right. The ball finds Ben Seghir on the far side but can't get past Kounde.

It's one-way traffic at the moment.

William Gittins
21

Robert Lewandowski

The Barcelona striker is down holding his head after a collision on the halfway line. He'll be fine to continue.

William Gittins
20

Twenty minutes in, Monaco are making all of the running at Stade Louis II.

The hosts come forward again with Ben Seghi on the left, cutting inside. He finds Camara in space on the edge of the box but his shot is off target.

William Gittins
18

Brilliant recovery challenge from Cubarsi.

Monaco win the ball high up the field and slide a pass through to Embolo. The Swiss striker prepare himself to shoot but, out of nowhere, Cubarsi slides in and blocks him effort with a perfect tackle.

William Gittins
17

Monaco come forward again, making the most of their numerical advantage to switch the play swiftly from side to side.

Barcelona haven't got to grips with the challenge here.

William Gittins
16

GOOOOOAAAAAAL! Maghnes Akliouche

The hosts lead!  A swift move up the field and Akliouche does brilliantly to skip past two challenges and fire home from the edge of the box.

William Gittins
14

Phew, what a start to the game.

Barcelona look to have switch to a 4-2-3 after Garcia's dismissal, with Yamal and Raphinha on the wings.

William Gittins
13

Raphinha squanders good opening.

Now down to ten men, Barcelona find Raphinha on a break away but he takes too long in front of goal. Monaco get defenders back and the chance goes begging.

William Gittins
12

Free kick to Monaco now, which is curled into the wall by Lamine Camara.

Barcelona get the ball clear.

William Gittins
11

Red card for Eric Garcia!

Hold on! It's a red!

The referee appeared to hesitate but he's now dismissed Eric Garcia.

Barcelona are down to ten men!

William Gittins
10

The Barcelona midfielder loses the ball on the edge of his own box and hauls Minimino down.

Free kick to the hosts and a booking for Garcia!

William Gittins
9

Breel Embolo will have to get through a lot of running for Monaco tonight. The Monaco man is playing as a lone striker, tasked with interrupting the Barcelona build-up.

William Gittins
8

Monaco are starting to look more assured now, finding a bit of time and space to play the ball out from the back.

William Gittins
6

Monaco are doubling up on Yamal everytime he gets the ball.

This time the 17-year-old loses it and the hosts storm up-field, finding Ben Seghir on the edge of the box. He tries his luck from range but Ter Stegen saves easily.

William Gittins
5

Barcelona loo to build down the left with Raphina. Balde makes an underlapping run from deep but he can't quite reach Raphinha's through ball.

William Gittins
3

Monaco nearly get caught trying to play the ball out from the back, a bit risky in the opening stages against a top team. Barcelona are pressing high with Pedri and Casado joining the frontline.

William Gittins
2

Good win from Kounde to head a long ball clear.

William Gittins
1

Straight away, Barcelona are looking for Yamal on the right. This time Kounde's pass is overhit and it goes out for a Monaco throw-in.

William Gittins
