Monterrey and Chivas will face off in an unprecedented match this weekend at the start of the Clausura 2023, as it will be the first time in the history of their clashes that they will meet at the start of a league season.

Monterrey have the advantage with 26 wins in the 58 matches they have played since short tournaments started in 1996. It will be interesting to see how both teams approach the opening match at the start of their respective Liga MX campaigns.

So far, the team coached by Serbian Veljko Paunovic, has 12 wins and 10 defeats away to Monterrey. The home team has scored more goals at home than the team from Guadalajara, with 43 goals to Chivas’ 42.

In Guadalajara, the fixture has been more comfortable for Chivas, with 14 wins and eight defeats as well as 46 goals scored and 36 conceded.

Chivas with better recent head-to-head

Chivas’ biggest win over Rayados is 4-2 and it has occurred on two occasions, in the 1999 Summer Tournament and on matchday 9 of the 2018 Apertura.

Monterrey manager Víctor Manuel Vucetich has coached both teams, and he knows the demands of both clubs very well and above all the responsibility that comes with each result.

In the last six games between the two sides, Chivas have won three, drawn two and lost one and will be hoping to pick up their first three points of the season.
