The alarm bells sounded at CF Monterrey on Monday, when an ambulance entered the club’s BBVA High Performance Center. Who was in need of attention? That was the question on all the assembled journalists’ lips.

The minutes passed, and it finally emerged that the patient was the club’s head coach, Víctor Manuel Vucetich. As Monterrey later confirmed in a statement, the 67-year-old had suffered a drop in blood pressure during training.

Vucetich was taken hospital, where he is stable and will only be kept in for medical check-ups that are routine for this type of situation. Video footage showed the coach walking unaided when he arrived at hospital in the municipality of San Pedro, Garza García, Nuevo León.

Rayados chasing Liga MX top spot and points record

Monterrey have started with a scare in a week that looked set to be a quiet one, with Rayados not in action again for another fortnight due to the September international break.

On the final matchday of the 2022 Apertura, Vucetich’s side will be looking to equal the club’s record points haul in short tournaments (37), a goal they will achieve if they beat Pachuca.

Monterrey also have top spot in the league table in their sights, as they are just one point behind leaders Club América.

Monterrey’s statement on Vucetich:

Club de Fútbol Monterrey Rayados informs that our head coach, Víctor Manuel Vucetich, suffered a drop in blood pressure during training on Monday at El Barrial.

The club’s medical staff stabilised the coach and, as a precaution, Vucetich was transferred to a hospital to be evaluated by his GP.

Once he has been examined and a medical evaluation is complete, an updated medical report will be issued.
