More bad news for Monterrey: surgery for Spanish star

It’s been a rough week for Monterrey. Just days after suffering a humiliating 6-2 defeat at the hands of Toluca on Wednesday, the club has now confirmed that Spanish midfielder Sergio Canales has undergone surgery and will be sidelined pending his recovery.

Canales has surgery on hamstring issue

Rayados released a statement via social media on Thursday, explaining that Canales underwent a “routine invasive physiotherapy procedure” following the match. Although there was no prior injury, the player experienced a complication in his right hamstring that required minor surgery.

How long will Canales be out for?

As a result, Canales is expected to miss Saturday’s clash against Santos Laguna in Matchday 11 of the Apertura 2025. The club has not provided a timeline for his return, stating that his recovery will be monitored day by day.

The Cantabrian playmaker has been a key figure for Rayados this season, currently leading the team in scoring with six goals. He’s also in contention for the Liga MX Golden Boot, trailing only Atlético San Luis forward Joao Pedro, who has eight goals.

Canales’ absence will be a significant blow for Monterrey, especially at a time when the team is trying to regain its footing. After leading the league earlier in the campaign, Rayados have slipped to third place following a draw against Club América and the heavy loss to Toluca.
