Barcelona has become one of the winners of the summer transfer window. Despite the troublesome financial situation of the club, the Catalan giants have executed the famous “levers” that have made it possible to sign multiple players This new sports policy, away from the commitment to the academy, is receiving criticism from some sectors in the world of football. One of the latest to join the group of detractors is former Dutch goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad, the Dutchman criticised Barcelona for what they are during the transfer market: “I can no longer hear the slogan ‘Més Que Un Club’ (more than a club). Barcelona is a commercial monstrosity, in my eyes, it symbolises everything that makes modern football so ugly.”

Waterreus was particularly upset about the treatment his compatriot Frenkie de Jong is receiving from Barcelona: “The way they are now blackmailing Frenkie is a striking example of this. I hope he keeps his balance and stays unless they harass him further and wreck his own chances heading into the World Cup. So it’s better that he goes to United...”.
