Napoli will have to wait a while longer to become 2022/23 Serie A champions. After Inter beat second-placed Lazio 3-1 earlier in the day, it was in the Partenopei’s hands going into this afternoon’s fixture with Salernitana.

Mathias Olivera opened the scoring for the home side in the 63rd minute at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, with fans inside and outside the ground preparing for a weekend of celebrations.

Napoli made wait for Serie A title

A win would have been enough for Luciano Spalletti’s men, but Salernitana hit back in the 84th minute when striker Boulaye Dia scored to make it 1-1 and spoil the party for now.

The draws means Napoli will have to wait to end a 33-year-long wait to lift their third Scudetto. With six games remaining in the Serie A season, the league leaders are 18 points ahead of Lazio in second and have a goal difference of +46, 20 more than Lazio’s +20.

Udinese next

Spalletti’s side travel to take on Udinese on 4 May, when they will have another chance to lift that much-coveted Serie A trophy.

Napoli’s last league success came in 1990 when club legend Diego Maradona helped the club lift the title. Maradona, after joining from FC Barcelona, led the club to their only two Italian championships, in 1987 and 1990.
