Neymar says Lionel Messi is “going to change” MLS with Inter Miami
Lionel Messi’s former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain teammate, Neymar Jr, believes that the Argentine will be a game-changer for MLS.
Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami has been heralded as a key moment in the history of American soccer by one of the game’s biggest stars, Neymar Jr.
During his two-year spell with Paris Saint-Germain Messi reunited with his former Barcelona teammate. In an interview with ESPN Brazil last Sunday, Neymar predicted that Messi’s arrival in the United States would change perceptions of the MLS.
“I’m sure Leo is going to change the league in the United States. I think the league is going to be much more popular, so everybody has to take advantage and enjoy watching him play, because unfortunately nothing lasts forever,” the Brazilian said.
Having led his team to a World Cup triumph last December, Messi is undoubtedly still one of the best players on the planet. His move to the worst team in the Eastern Conference will certainly help to raise the level on the pitch, but will also accelerate the growth of the game more broadly.
Much like David Beckham’s move to MLS side LA Galaxy in 2009, Messi brings far more than his elite skillset to the States. Messi is one of the most marketable athletes on the planet and his reputation as a genuine great will be a major boon for MLS as it looks to improve its reputation amongst sports fans around the world.
After deciding to leave PSG he was the subject of a reported $500m-a-year offer from Saudi Arabia, but opted for a move to MLS. Despite earning considerably less with Inter Miami, Messi will still reap huge financial rewards for his switch to the Sunshine State. Reports suggest that, in addition to a healthy salary, the Argentina magician will also receive a proportion of the league’s commercial deals with Adidas and Apple, two key partners.
Neymar sorry to see ‘best friend’ depart
Messi’s arrival may be good news for MLS but Neymar admitted that he was sad to be losing a close friend. The two have a good relationship on and off the pitch and the Neymar told ESPN Brazil that he was sad to learn of his friend’s departure from the French capital.
“I already knew... Messi is one of my best friends, it’s a gift that football has given me to have the opportunity to meet him, play with him and then establish such a beautiful friendship,” the Brazilian said.
“I told him he’s going to be very happy for the city, for the lifestyle and for the opportunity to live and play here in Miami.
“I’m sure Leo is going to change the league in the United States. I think the league is going to be much more popular, so everybody has to take advantage and enjoy watching him play, because unfortunately nothing lasts forever,” Neymar added.
US-based soccer fans will be eager to see him in action but they may have to wait a little longer. The 35-year-old has just finished a gruelling European season, with a World Cup squeezed in the middle, and requires some time off before starting work in Miami. The Athletic report that he is likely to make his debut against Liga MX side Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup on 21 July.
