Marco Asensio will sever company with Real Madrid at the end of the season with the player breaking the news via his social media channels.

The forward signed for Real Madrid in 2014, but spent the first year on loan at Espanyol joining the side from the capital the following year. Asensio leaves Madrid having won three Champions League, four Club World Cups, three Leagues, three European Super Cups, one Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups.

Asensio, who signed for Real Madrid in 2014, has scored 61 goals and provided 32 assists in 285 appearances for the club.

On Saturday afternoon, Asensio and Real Madrid made the news official with the player posting an emotional video stating: “The time has come to make a difficult decision. I have decided to embark on a new direction in my career. Thank you, dear madridistas, for your unconditional support. We will meet again”. The player was frustrated to have not secured more playing time under Ancelotti and speculation abounds that the Parc des Princes and a move to PSG awaits the player.

The club also posted a brief message thanking the player for his time in the white shirt: “Real Madrid would like to express its gratitude and affection to Marco Asensio, a player who has defended our badge and our colours for seven seasons.

As madridistas we will never forget his career and his outstanding conduct during all this time. Real Madrid is and will always be his home, and we wish him and all his family the best of luck in this new chapter in his career.”

New challenges

Asensio has been represented by Jorge Mendes for over a year now, after the player broke off relations with Horacio Gagglio (his lifelong agent) and in recent time has told Madrid of offers that were coming his way (primarily from England). Most of the interest has hailed from England with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Aston Villa monitoring the player at close quarters. Despite the Premier League interest, the Ligue 1 champions’ new project, along with the firm interest they have shown in the man from Mallorca, appear to have tipped the balance in their favour.
