Riqui Puig is officially a new Los Angeles Galaxy player. The mifielder joins from Barcelona, signing a three-year contract with one of the most emblematic teams in MLS. The 22-year-old embarks on an adventure very different from the usual ones for players of his age, but he does so with motivation and enthusiasm. Not surprisingly, the Galaxy are making a commitment to young players and Riqui will be one of their franchise players.

The Barcelona academy player had other ofers, but as soon as AC Talent, his agency, received the one from LA Galaxy, it was clear that it was the best option. As a franchise player he will have the minutes and continuity he needs at his age, after a few seasons in the Spanish top flight in which he was unable to shake off his tag as a sub at Barça.

Galaxy’s gamble on Riqui also has media repercussions. A few years back they signed Gio dos Santos - another Barça youth product - and the move proved to be a smart one. Víctor Vázquez, who also came through La Masia, is also in the squad. It is hoped that with this new addition of another player with Barça DNA, will enhance the team’s two stars - Douglas Costa and Chicharito. With Riqui, without a doubt, the front two will get a lot of quality service.

Riqui Puig is the latest player to swap European football for the MLS. Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini, both signed up with Los Angeles FC - Galaxy’s neighbours and rivals. The focus is back on the MLS with four years to go before the USA, Mexico and Canada host the 2026 World Cup.
