Timo Werner is returning home. The striker returns to the club who sold him to Chelsea for 53 million euros in 2020, becoming the most expensive German transfer in history. The 26-year-old striker had three years left on his contract, but Chelsea and Leipzig reached an agreement on a price - 20 million euros. The deal will keep Werner in Leipzig until 2026.

Werner’s time at Stamford Bridge didn’t turn out as well as the club had expected. With Leipzig, he scored a record of 90 goals and 40 assists but in two seasons with Chelsea, he has returned 23 goals in 89 appearances with just 15 starts in the Premier League. The player left a goodbye message for the club and the fans: “Today marks the end of my journey with Chelsea FC. I am incredibly grateful for the time I have spent at this special club.”

“I would like to express my appreciation for my teammates, the coaches and staff, and especially for you, the special supporters of Chelsea Football Club. I felt so much love and support throughout the last two years and I will never forget how you guys stood behind me in good and in challenging times! We lifted trophies like the Champions League together and I will always remember the song you wrote and chanted for me. I’m already looking forward to hopefully playing at Stamford Bridge again one day!”

It turned out to be a profitable deal for Leipzig, they retrieve a player for less than half the price they sold him for. Werner had other offers, but decided the best move would be to go back to the club where he played his best football.
