Seattle based NWSL club OL Reign overcame Chicago Red Stars on the final day of the NWSL season with striker Megan Rapinoe scoring a brace to help secure a playoff place for her side and in the process delay her retirement from the game.

The 38-year-old veteran Rapinoe had previously confirmed that this will be her final season as a professional and will call time with the US national team and her OL Reign side.

The Reign went into the final day in a playoff spot, but were battling with five other teams for the four available spots and needed maximum points to advance.

The win combined with other results saw the Seattle based outfit finish the campaign in fourth place and now face LA’s Angel City in the NWSL playoffs.

A win over Angel City would see a semifinal matchup against Alex Morgan’s San Diego Wave who won the Shield for the best team of the regular season with a 2-0 win over Racing Louisville on the final day with three possible games left to play for Rapinoe should the Reign go all the way to the 11 November final.
