Only one Mexican in the Liga MX’s top five goal scorer chart

We are now in the final stretch of the Clausura 2024 - with just four weeks of the regular phase to play, now is the moment when both the teams aspiring to win the title as well as the individuals vying for personal achievements have to show what they’re made of. The battle to lift the trophy has started to take shape, and so has the race to end as the championship’s top goal scorer, which looks extremely tight, especially in the top part of the list.

With Federico Viñas finding the net at the weekend in Leon’s 1-2 win at Necaxa and Luis Amarilla on target against Tijuana, it’s looking tight at the top of the goal scoring chart. Despite the great moment of form that both the Uruguayan and the Paraguayan - and of course, Pachuca’s Venezuelan frontman Salomón Rondón, there is one factor that can’t be ignored: the absence of Mexicans among the top places.

Where are the Mexicans?

In the Apertura 2023, Colombian Harold Preciado won the award for ending as the tournament’s top scorer but Mexican nationals Guillermo Martínez, Ángel Sepúlveda and César Huerta were close behind. That’s not the case this time. There are hardly any homegrown players in the top five positions.

Just behind El Rey Salomón, Maraviñas and Totín, who share leadership all on seven goals so far, there’s Necaxa’s Colombian forward Diber Cambindo in fourth place on six; Chivas’ Víctor Guzmán and Pumas’ Guillermo Martínez, both on six, are the only Mexicans in the top three.

Tijuana’s Colombian midfielder Christian Rivera features with six as well, along with Brandón Vázquez, Sergio Canales (both Rayados). There’s even a goalkeeper in the running - Diablos Rojos’ penalty-taking keeper Tiago Volpi took his tally to five at the weekend. Bringing up the list of players with five goals are Mexicans: Uriel Antuna, Erick Sánchez and Eduardo Aguirre.

There are 15 players on four goals each - among them the two most recent Liga MX goal scoring champions: Harold Preciado (Snatos Laguna) and Henry Martín (América).
