Rayados de Monterrey are now guaranteed at least a place in the preliminary round of the playoffs, after the regular-season leaders beat Pachuca 2-1 on matchday 11 of the Clausura 2023 tournament.
And, with eight points now separating them from fifth-placed Club América, it’s surely only a matter of time before Víctor Manuel Vucetich’s men make sure of a top-four finish and direct qualification for the eight-team postseason proper.
Gallardo, Cortizo on target as Rayados hit back to win at Pachuca
Monterrey had to come from behind at the Estadio Hidalgo on Sunday, after Marino Hinestroza gave Pachuca - the defending Mexican champions - a third-minute lead. Receiving the ball on the edge of the area, the Colombian took one touch before firing in a low finish past goalkeeper Esteban Andrada.
However, Rayados did not take long to react. With 16 minutes on the clock, Jesús Gallardo levelled with a pinpoint strike from 20 yards, after a neat exchange with Arturo González.
Early in the second half, Jordi Cortizo then completed the turnaround, meeting Luis Romo’s lay-off at the top of the box with a first-time drive that Pachuca keeper Óscar Ustari could do little about.
Pachuca outside top four but still in race
While Monterrey have taken one step closer to the Clausura 2023 quarter-finals, Pachuca slip to sixth in the regular-season table. However, Los Tuzos remain firmly in the hunt for an automatic playoff berth, given that the three teams below Rayados are all just two points ahead of Guillermo Almada’s side.
Tigres up next for Rayados
On matchday 12 next weekend, Monterrey visit fierce rivals Tigres in the Clásico Regio, while Pachuca go to the Estadio Olímpico Universitario to face Pumas.
