Roddy Cons
Gonçalo Ramos netted a hat-trick as Portugal take Switzerland apart in the round of 16, despite Cristiano Ronaldo starting on the substitutes’ bench.

Portugal vs Switzerland live from Lusail Iconic Stadium

FT Portgual 6-1 Switzerland! What a performance!

Brazil put on a show yesterday and Portugal have followed suit today.

And they've done it (more or less) without Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal captain being dropped to the bench was the big story before the game but manager Fernando Santos' selection has been completely justified, with Ronaldo's replacement Gonçalo Ramos netting a superb hat-trick. Portugal were slick in possession, with Ramos' clever movement giving Bernardo Silva, João Félix, Bruno Fernandes and others a target to hit in behind and space to work in. Ramos' finishing was reminiscent of that of Ronaldo, who came on for the youngster to a huge ovation for the final 20 minutes.

As for Switzerland, the less said the better. That opted to play with three at the back in the first half and looked uncomfortable doing so, with Portugal able to slice them open time and again. Murat Yakin's side are normally resolute and tough to break down, but that wasn't at all the case here. A night to forget for the Swiss, who didn't offer much of a threat going forward either.

What a line-up! Can you wait? I can't!

But we'll have to...for the first time since November 19, there will be no World Cup tomorrow (or the day after that). What are you going to do with your lives?

Be sure to join us again on Friday, we'll be bringing you live coverage of all four quarter-finals and beyond!

Joâo Félix: We've been sending a message since the first game

Joâo Félix, speaking to Fox Sports:

On Gonçalo Ramos: "He deserves it a lot. He a great kid, he's having a great season at Benfica. He works a lot."

"He plays like that (there's no pressure). He plays like he's playing for Benfica. He, and everyone who plays, needs to play without pressure, because when you play without pressure, that's when things go better."

On Portugal's World Cup hopes: "We've been sending a message since the first game. We're here to fight for the title but we're taking it game by game."

Gonçalo Ramos: player of the match

In news that will come as a shock to absolutely nobody, Portugal striker Gonçalo Ramos has been named player of the match after his hat-trick. Three great finishes and a superb all-round performance.

Well done, that man!

Portugal's hat-trick hero Gonçalo Ramos: Cristiano Ronaldo always tries to help us

Also speaking to RTP was hat-trick hero Gonçalo Ramos:

"Everything has happened really quickly. Will I start in the next game? That's not up to me. I need to work as hard as I can and see what happens. Cristiano has spoken to me, like he has spoken to everyone. He's the captain and always tries to help us."

Portugal manager Fernando Santos: Ronaldo and Ramos are different players

Portugal manager Fernando Santos, speaking to Portuguese broadcatser RTP:

On Portugal's overall performance: "It wasn't a perfect night but it was a very successful one. We played with attitude and great levels of concentration throughout the match. It was a great match but now it's important to come back down to earth."

On his decision to start with Ramos instead of Ronaldo: "I already explained it, I'm not going to explain it again, They're different players."

Reaction coming up!

We'll have a bit of reaction coming up from some of the game's main protagonists, starting with Portugal boss Fernando Santos.

When is Morocco vs Portugal in the quarter-finals?

Morocco will take on Portugal in the quarter-finals on Saturday, 10 December, with kickoff at 10am ET. The game will be played at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

Portugal through to face Morocco in the quarter-finals

Portugal's opponents in the quarter-finals will be Morocco, who, in case you missed it, defeated Spain in a penalty shootout earlier on Tuesday.

Here's how that one went down.

Gonçalo Ramos the Portuguese hero

Make no mistake about it, Gonçalo Ramos is the main story from tonight's game (or should be, at least). Eyebrows were raised when he was named in the team ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo but he delivered, and how!

Some great stats in about that last one?

And only Pelé has scored a World Cup knockout-round hat-trick at a younger age.

Portugal ending their World Cup hoodoo

They've done really well in the European Championships of late, winning it in 2016, of course, but this is the first time Portugal have made it as far as the World Cup quarter-finals since 2006, when they finished third.

They'll take some stopping if they keep playing like that!

Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Portugal celebrations...

He does have previous for this...Maybe he just had to make an urgent phone call. Let's hope this isn't the story after such a fantastic performance from the Portuguese.

One thing's for sure, Ronaldo will find it tough to get back into the team on that performance.

What a fitting way to end the contest! Leão cuts inside from the left and curls what looks to be a superb strike into the corner to make it six! On close inspection, it was pretty central and Sommer should probably have done better.

Still, Leão and Portugal won't care. It's a rout!

Superb defending again from Pepe! Okafor, who was actually offside, looks set to get a shot away but is denied by a brilliant block. He might be a bit of a menace but he's a great defender, no doubt.

It's that time of the game

I don't know about you but five substitutes feels like too many to me. Many because I have to document them all!

Switzerland replace Embolo with Jashari

Bruno Fernandes next to get a little break for Portugal, Rafael Leão comes on.

Bruno Fernandes next to get a little break for Portugal, Rafael Leão comes on.

Ronaldo almost in again! The ball over the top finds him in the box but Cömert again does just enough to put him off.

Ronaldo has the ball in the net...but he's well offside.

Finished it very well though, as you'd expect!

Ronaldo looks as it he might get away... but Cömert picks his pocket. No joy for the substitute yet....

A dangerous looking cross comes in from Rodríguez but Pepe emphatically heads it clear. A imperious performance at both ends from the veteran!

Ruben Neves replaces Bernardo Silva for Portugal.

Acrobatic from Embolo! The ball comes into Embolo and it looks as if he's trying to lay it off to Seferovic, but it pops up off his foot perfectly for an overhead kick, which goes wide via Dalot's head.

Xhaka gets on the end of the corner but can't keep it on target.

Yes, it was Ronaldo and yes, it went straight into the wall!

There's a free-kick for Portugal about 30 yards out. I wonder who's going to take it...

Cristiano Ronaldo on

Ronaldo, Vitinha and Horta on for Félix, Otávio and Ramos.

You can guess how loud the cheers were once he set foot on the field.

Incredible cheers for Cristiano Ronaldo

Oh My God. The cheers which went round the ground as Cristiano Ronaldo appeared ready to come on at the touchline were incredible.

Fernandes inches away from a sixth! A superb switch of play finds Guerreiro all alone on the left and his first-time cross is just too far ahead of the onrushing Fernandes at the back post.

Félix picks out another superbly timed run from Ramos and he stabs one cleverly over the goalkeeper to restore Portugal's four-goal lead!

WOW! Shaqiri lines one up from the edge of the area and sends it into orbit!

Did that stay in the stadium? I'm actually not sure.

Fernando Santos on the touchline, looking annoyed with the aforementioned chants. Although he always looks quite annoyed, to be fair, so maybe it's hard to tell.

Cristiano Ronaldo chants

Chants of 'Ronaaaaldo, Ronaaaaldo' ring round the ground. Not that Portugal need him...

An immediate response from Switzerland! A simple corner into the box takes a nick off Ramos and Ekanji is at the back post to prod the ball into the net. Surely they couldn't?

What a performance this is from Portugal!

A superb team goal as Otavio, Félix and Ramos slice the Switzerland defence open and give Guerreiro the chance to rifle the ball high past Sommer.

This is the rout none of us saw coming.

Double change for Switzerland

Zakaria and Seferovic on for Sow and Freuler.

What a night this young man is having!

It looked as if the chance might have gone as Fernandes refused an invitation to shoot at the edge of the box but the ball works its way to Dalot, who makes space for a low cross to the near post which is fired beyond Sommer by Ramos!

He looks delighted and so he should be!

Cristiano Ronaldo-watch

The Portugal captain is warming up on the touchline. Surely we'll see him at some point?

Portugal doing the early running in the second half. They earn a corner, which is taken by Bernardo Silva, but cleared by Ricardo Rodríguez.

Switzerland half-time change

Eray Cömert on for Fabian Schâr.

We're back underway! What can Switzerland do to turn this around?

Bruno Fernandes on form

Two goals and three assists for Bruno Fernandes in the 2022 World Cup so far.

He's always capable of making something happen.

WIll Cristiano Ronaldo make an appearance?

What do we have in store in the second half? Will Cristianro Ronaldo make an appearance? The way it's going, Fernando Santos will be able to rest some of his key players...

HT Portugal 2-0 Switzerland!

Hugely impressive from Portugal so far (without Cristiano Ronaldo, in case you'd forgotten...)!

Some have claimed that Portugal would play better as a team without their all-time top goalscorer and it's hard to argue with that theory on the basis of that first half. Gonçalo Ramos, Ronaldo's direct replacement, will get the headlines thanks to his superb opening strike, although his general play has been equally impressive, with his movement giving the likes of Bernardo Silva, João Félix and Bruno Fernandes a target to find and space to work in.

Switzerland, by contract, have been hugely disappointing. Normally sturdy and resolute, they've had no answer to the speed of Portugal's passing and movement and have created very little in attack. Breel Embolo has had moments of promise but those have faded as the half has gone on.

It's a long way back for Switzerland and there have been few signs they are capable of turning this around.

Switzerland have had little spark in attack and Vargas' attempt to play Shaqiri through on goal runs straight out of play. Not happening for the Swiss.

It's played short this time and worked across to Guerreiro, who tries one from long-range but doesn't keep it down.

Another corner for Portugal. can they add a third here?

Four minutes of stoppage time.

Wonderful footwork from João Félix to get away from several Swiss players in midfield! The final ball let him down though.

In the build-up to that chance for Ramos, Schär wiped Félix out in midfield and is booked. He'll miss Switzerland's next game, which doesn't look like it'll be in the quarter-finals...

Great save from Sommer! Ramos makes another run in behind and is picked out by Bruno Fernandes. The young striker's low effort is on target but Sommer gets down low to make a smart stop!

A waste from Bruno Fernandes! He picks up possession in a good position on the right, has bodies in the box and sticks it straight out for a goal kick. Disappoiting.

Pepe's record

There we have it. Pepe is official the oldest player ever to score at a World Cup. Don't risk telling him that, though.

Almost a response from Switzerland!

Fernandes drives a cross across goal, Costa makes a meal of it and almost gifts it to Freuler, although the goalkeeper gets a hand on the Swiss' effort and allows Dalot to knock it off the line.

I don't know if I should open this can of warms but Portugal have been really dynamic going forward so far. Ramos' movement has been excellent, Félix and Silva have played off him really well. Is it a coincidence...?

The very definition of a 'thumping' header!

Nothing fancy about this one as Bruno Fernandes sticks a corner in the box, Pepe rises above everyone and thumps a header past Sommer! Emphatic.

Almost an own goal from Schär! Félix whips in a lovely cross and Schär flicks the ball just wide of his own post under pressure from Ramos!

Close from Shaqiri! That was a looooooong way out but it wasn't far away from Shaqiri! Costa got a little touch on it to get it round the post. The corner comes to nothing.

Impressive strength from Breel Embolo, who charges goalwards and brushes off Ruben Dias, who can only stop him with a foul. Shaqiri will fancy this free-kick...

A back three for Switzerland

Switzerland had been expected to start with a back four but they've gone with a back three, with Ricardo Rodríguez playing in central defence rather than left-back.

Ramos' chance

Ramos needed his chance, he got his chance and now he's taking his chance! A superb start from the Benfica man.

Ramos again! This game has come to life out of nowhere and Ramos is involved in everything! Silva and Felix combine to find him on the edge of the box and his low shot forces another save from Sommer.

Another chance for Portugal and Ramos is involved again! The ball is played into him and he lays it off neatly for Otávio, whose strike is gathered quite easily by Sommer.

And it just had to be Cristiano Ronaldo's direct replacement, didn't it?

That was a superb strike from Ramos. Normally, you might criticise a goalkeeper for being beaten at the near post but that was unstoppable!

It looks as if Fernando Santos made the right decision after all...!

Félix picks the ball up from a three and chips it into Ramos, who takes a touch towards goal and rifles one high into the net at the near post. What a strike!

Pepe striding forward from the back and into Swiss territory, he almost manages to pick out João Félix on the edge of the box but it just runs away from the attacker and the chance is gone.

There's not been much going on out on the field but the highlight so far has been an impressively coordinated 'thunderclap' from the fans in the ground, which drew a huge ovation at the end.

A good chance for Edimilson Fernandes to get forward for the first time on the right. He gets into a decent position for a cross but overhits it and it goes straight out of play.

Cristiano Ronaldo under the spotlight

I told you about the number of photographers waiting for Cristiano Ronaldo's photographic proof!

Even-steven in the opening seven minutes. Neither side in the ascendency, still feeling each other out.

A first sight of goal for Embolo! He bundles his way into a shooting position in the box but it's blocked away for a corner, which is well defended.

Please don't tell me you weren't alive then...

Ruben Dias has got away with one there as he shepherds the ball out of play under pressure from Embolo. A sly elbow caught the Swiss striker, who's not happy.

A beautiful, beautiful touch from Ronaldo's replacement Ramos as he takes the ball out of the sky and looks to be clean through on goal...but he's offside.

Huge cheers for Bernando Silva as he makes a tentative break down the left for Portugal. Will Ronaldo's absence bring the best out of some of the others?

Are you ready? I hope so, because we're off!

Who is the referee for Portugal vs Switzerland in the World Cup 2022 round of 16?

Who is the referee for Portugal vs Switzerland in the World Cup 2022 round of 16?

You've seen the teams but what about the man in the middle and his colleagues?

Here's William with the low-down on César Ramos of Mexico.

National anthems review

I always think Portugal's is quite a grandiose number. A distinctive finale.

Switzerland: classy and understated. I like the slow-down at the end for effect.

The teams are in the tunnel

We are almost ready to go...national anthems up next!

Plenty of Cristiano Ronaldo 'substitute' photos...

There should be plenty of photos of Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench tonight. There are literally dozens of photographers with their back to the pitch as the substitutes make their way to the dugout.

10 minutes until kickoff!

I hope you're sitting comfortably (unlike Cristiano Ronaldo, who I'm sure will be sitting most uncomfortably)!

Last call to get the pre-match drinks in!

Switzerland at the World Cup

Is there a more underrated team in international competitions than Switzerland? They've qualified for every international tournament since 2004, other than Euro 2012, and have been regular participants in the knockout stages. They've reached the last 16 in three of the last four tournaments and head into this game as underdogs, although Portugal would be fools to underestimate them.

Portugal at the World Cup

It's pretty unbelievable to think that Portugal had only ever appeared at two World Cups before 2002. Inspired by Eusebio, they finished third on their first appearance in England in 1966, then went out in the group stages 20 years later. The 2022 tournament is their sixth in a row, with their best finish coming in 2006, when they lost in the semi-finals and finished third once more. They have either been eliminated in the group stages or in the round of 16 in their other five appearances.

Dalot wins 'Manchester derby'

Diogo Dalot has come out on top in a 'Manchester derby' or sorts. The United man has been preferred at right-back to City defender João Cancelo, who started all three group games, including the first two at right-back, but has been left on the bench today,

Cancelo has been one of the stand-out performers in the Premier League in the last few years but he'll have to play second fiddle tonight.

Messi achieved it on Saturday

It seems like it's almost impossible to contemplate Cristiano Ronaldo without mentioning Lionel Messi, even when you really want to.

Messi had never scored in the knockout stages until three days ago...I wouldn't bet on Ronaldo catching him up, even if he doesn't start today.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal record

Cristiano Ronaldo, as you might imagine, has a ridiculous record, both goalscoring and otherwise, for Portugal.

He's played 194 for times for his country, the highest number of international appearances by a European. He's scored 118 international goals, a world record. He's the only player in history to have scored in five World Cups and has scored more goals in the European Championships than anyone else.

He made his international debut for Portugal in 2003 and this is the 10th tournament he has taken part in, with Portugal winning the 2016 Euros despite him being forced off early on in the final because of an injury.

Ronaldo needs one more goal to equal Eusebio's record of nine World Cup goals but he has never scored in the knockout rounds of the competition. If he's going to do it tonight, he'll have to do so from the bench.

Portugal have arrived!

Portugal are in the house! And they'll have fond memories of this particular house, the Lusail Iconic Stadium, where they beat Uruguay 2-0 in the group stages.

70% of Portugal fans didn't want Cristiano Ronaldo to start vs Switzerland

According to a survey carried out by Portuguese sports paper A Bola, 70% of Portugal fans asked didn't want Cristiano Ronaldo to start for their country against Switzerland. They've got their wish.

There's been plenty of chat in England over the last year or so about whether Manchester United functioned better as a team without Ronaldo. And it appears that the same conversations are being had in Portugal. Ronaldo will still get you goals but does he do enough to help the team in other ways? I guess it depends on who else is in your team and how you set up to play.

A brave decision from Fernando Santos, who knows that he'll be severely criticised if Portugal lose this one and he's not selected the country's all-time top goalscorer.

Switzerland starting XI vs Portugal

Sommer; Fernandes, Schär, Akanji, Rodríguez; Freuler, Xhaka; Shaqiri, Sow, Vargas, Embolo.

A 4-2-3-1 for the Swiss by the looks of it.

Switzerland starting line-up vs Portugal

Two changes from the team that defeated Serbia. Yann Sommer returns in goal, with Edmilson Fernandes replacing Silvan Widmer at right-back.

Just under an hour to go until kickoff

Kickoff is fast approaching! And we've got some Switzerland team news coming right up, I'm not sure there'll be anything quite as mind-blowing as the Portugal team news.

Portugal starting line-up vs Switzerland

Costa; Dalot, Pepe, Dias, Guerreiro; Otávio, Carvalho, Bernardo Silva; Fernandes, Ramos, Félix.

21-year-old Gonçalo Ramos, who plays for Benfica and has just three caps, has been preferred to Cristiano Ronaldo in attack.

OFFICLAL: Cristiano Ronaldo DROPPED!

It's happened. Cristiano Ronaldo has been DROPPED for Portugal vs Switzerland.

Portugal or Switzerland vs Morocco in the quarter-finals!

It's finished in today's other round of 16 clash and we have a (kind of) shock!

Morocco have beaten Spain in a penalty shootout, which saw perhaps the worst collection of penalties taken by one team (even worse than Japan's yesterday). Three shots, no goals for the Spaniards. Oh dear.

It'll be Portugal or Switzerland vs Morocco for a place in the semi-finals.

Nothing official on Cristiando Ronaldo absence from Portugal team

Nothing has been officially confirmed in relation to Cristiano Ronaldo's potential absence from the starting line-up. But one thing is for sure - Portugal boss Fernando Santos was NOT happy with his captain's reaction to be taken off in the defeat to South Korea. Speaking yesterday, Santos had this to say on the incident:

"I was very far away and I only saw him arguing with a South Korean player, and nothing else. Have I already watched the footage? Yes. I didn't like it. I didn't like it at all. From there, it's things you sort out internally, it was sorted out this way, and now we think about the game tomorrow. Everyone is focused on the game."

"When we're in the stadium they find out about the team, and they know that. It's been like this since I arrived. I will start the team that I think should play. It's what I've been doing my entire life. I'm OK with myself, have no problem."

Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly DROPPED for round of 16 game against Switzerland!

Breaking news: Portuguese media are reporting that Cristiano Ronaldo has been dropped from the Portugal starting XI for the game against Switzerland! Wow! I'm not sure I actually saw that coming, despite everything...

Morocco vs Spain live online: extra time, score, stats and updates | Qatar World Cup 2022

Morocco vs Spain live online: extra time, score, stats and updates | Qatar World Cup 2022

Another reminder for you to head over to catch the end of Morocco vs Spain. 0-0 might not sound like a classic but it's frantic stuff! We're into the second half of extra-time and who wins is anyone's guess!

Portugal: the Cristiano Ronaldo 'show'

A little bit more on Portugal's route to the round of 16, which has been littered with anecdotes that are worth remembering. First up, how would Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes get along after the former's criticism of Manchester United, who the latter still plays for? How would Ronaldo react to being a free agent having had his contract with the Old Trafford club terminated before the tournament? Pretty well initially, as he scored Portugal's first goal at the World Cup in a 3-2 win over Ghana, which made him the first man to score in five editions of the competition. Portugal vs Uruguay was supposed to be a group decider and was won fairly comfortably by Fernando Santos' team. But did Fernando or Ronaldo score the first goal? Did Cristiano get a touch on Bruno's cross? No, said FIFA. CR7 still needs a goal to equal Eusebio's record of World Cup goals (nine). The win against Uruguay meant the last game against South Korea was fairly irrelevant - at least for Portugal - but Ronaldo, for the umpteenth time, reacted badly to being taken off in the second half of the 2-1 defeat and Santos was even less amused.

You may notice a recurring theme here.

Switzerland: how they got here

Switzerland's path to the round of 16 was a little trickier than Portugal's, not least because they found themselves drawn in a group with Brazil, who showed the world what they were capable of on Monday. The Swiss got off to a strong start, edging out Cameroon by a goal to nil thanks to a goal from Breel Embolo, playing against the nation of his birth. The fact that their second group game was against Brazil meant that it was always going to be a tough ask to post back-to-back victories and so it proved, as they were on the wrong end of a 1-0 defeat. Murat Yakin's men did, however, keep the Brazilians at bay until the 83rd minute, which is no mean feat, as we saw yesterday. A win and a loss set up a tense decider against Serbia but we were treated to a thrilling first half, which saw four goals, with Switzerland twice coming from behind. Remo Freuler's strike early in the second half sealed the win for the Swiss and a place in the round of 16.

Morocco vs Spain goes to extra-time!

All over (after 90 minutes) in today's other game!

It's ended Morocco 0-0 Spain and we're going to have extra-time for the second day in a row after Japan vs Croatia yesterday.

Might we have some penalty action too, I wonder...

Round of 16 decision day!

We've just come off the back of three round-of-16 decision days. And there are plenty more to come!

The last week or so of this World Cup has been so dramatic hasn't it?

Portugal: how they got here

The group stages was pretty plain sailing for Fernando Santos' side. They were one of three nations, along with France and Brazil, to seal qualification with a game to spare, with opening victories against Ghana and Uruguay meaning that their defeat to South Korea on matchday three was irrelevant.

However, will that have disrupted their rhythm at all? We'll find out soon enough!
