Portugal will be hoping to follow up their 3-2 win over Ghana with a win against Uruguay in Group H.

Uruguay began their World Cup campaign with a 0-0 draw against South Korea. Real Madrid’s Fede Valverde almost gave the South Americans all three points with a thunderous effort that struck the post but they had to settle for a draw.

Uruguay’s head coach, Diego Alonso, says it will be a “balanced game” against Portugal, “similar to what they have all been” in the World Cup.

“We respect every opponent. We’ve seen how balanced the games have been in this World Cup. Portugal also struggled against Ghana. We want to win, that’s what we’re here for, but we know that everyone gives their best and any result is possible,” he said in a pre-match press conference.

Alonso, who was previewing Monday’s Group H second-round match, highlighted the “deep knowledge” that the Portuguese players have of each other, coupled with Fernando Santos’ longevity at the helm of the team.

“They have a great variability in their game, it’s a complete team, very good. Besides all the individuals they have, they still have a coach who has been leading them for a long time. But we also have our weapons, our strengths, which make us just as dangerous,” stressed the 47-year-old.

Portugal top of group

Portugal’s win in their opening match sees them lead the group with three points, ahead of Paulo Bento’s Korea Republic and Uruguay, both on one point, while Ghana, who face the South Koreans on the same day, trail with zero points.

Confirmed Portugal XI vs Uruguay:

Diogo Costa; Cancelo, Rúben Dias, Pepe, Nuno Mendes; Rúben Neves, William Carvalho, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes; João Félix, Cristiano Ronaldo.
