When Adama Traoré joined West Ham United during the winter transfer window, expectations were high. The Spanish winger has yet to start a game for the London club, but he has become a regular option off the bench under head coach Nuno Espírito Santo.

If there is one area where Traoré clearly stands out, it is his physical presence. The former Barcelona academy product is often described as a ‘brick wall’ thanks to his remarkable genetics.

The debate over Traoré’s physique

In England, Traoré’s muscular build has sparked debate. Some observers believe he may not need that much muscle mass, arguing it could even reduce his speed.

Nuno addressed the issue in a press conference, revealing that the coaching staff has told the Spanish winger to avoid weightlifting because he does not need to add more muscle.

His muscles are incredible, it’s genetics. He’s been built like that for a long time and he should avoid the gym. I’ve told him not to go. It’s one of the things I think he needs to understand. He already has enough weight. He’ll do preventive work in the gym, but he won’t be there lifting weights.”

Why Traoré matters to West Ham

Nuno also emphasized Traoré’s importance to the squad, even when he is not starting.

“You have to understand that players who don’t play are crucial for us in terms of preparation and the options we have for each game. Traoré is unique. There aren’t many players in world soccer with his ability, pace, and skill in one-on-one situations.

Adapting to a new team

The Portuguese coach believes the winger still needs time to fully adjust.

“He’s a talent we have to make the most of, but it will take time. He has to adapt. He has to understand many things about the team’s dynamics. But he has shown it, not only at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but also recently with Spain national football team. So we are talking about a high-level player. I think the team has welcomed him very well. He has given us a new boost. We have worked every day to help him. Traoré has the patience to realize that his opportunity will come.”

For now, Traoré must keep working to earn a place in Nuno’s starting lineup. At the same time, his coach is making one thing clear: the Spanish winger should stay out of the weight room so his explosive one-on-one ability remains intact.
