There was plenty of drama at both the top end and the relegation zone of the Premier League as the curtain came down on the 2021-22 season on Sunday

Just as Manchester City were being crowned Premier League champions after their dramatic 3-2 win over Aston Villa, just 40km away at Turf Moor, there was heartbreak as Burnley became the third side to confirm their relegation to the EFL Championship.

‘The Clarets’ were relegated from the Premier League after a 2-1 home defeat by Newcastle United on the final day of the season on Sunday that sent them down to the second tier for the first time since 2015.

Leeds United, who were in the drop zone on goal difference heading into the last round of fixtures, remain in the top flight after a 2-1 win at Brentford ensured they finished above Burnley in 17th place.

Burnley, who last month sacked long-serving manager Sean Dyche with eight games remaining, finished in 18th on 35 points, three behind Leeds, and will join Watford and Norwich City in the Championship next season.

Coming up

The Premier League trio of relegated clubs will be replaced by Fulham and Bournemouth who came first and second in the EFL Championship respectively. The third promoted side will be decided via a one-off play-off game which will be staged next Sunday (29 May) at London’s Wembley Stadium as Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest go head to head in a game which is purported to be the ‘richest game in club football’ with the financial boost securing a place in England’s top flight offers the winning team. Huddersfield and Forest came third and fourth in the league and had to negotiate tricky home and away ties against Luton Town and Sheffield United to set up the Wembley showdown.
