PSG’s Al-Khelaïfi questions legality of Barcelona’s financial ‘levers’

“Is it fair? No, it’s not fair. Is it legal? I’m not sure.” The president of Paris Saint-Germain and UEFA official is worried about Barça’s moves.

The president of Paris Saint-Germain, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, once again showed his disagreement with the so-called economic ‘levers’ that FC Barcelona has used to allow them to make significant summer transfers and that he is not sure that they are entirely above board.

Barcelona finances under scrutiny

“Is this fair? No, it’s not fair. Is it legal? I’m not sure,” Al-Khelaifi said in an interview published on Wednesday by Politico.

“If they allow them, others will do the same. UEFA, of course, have their own regulations. For sure they’re going to look at everything.”

The Qatari had already been critical of this maneuver by the Catalan team during the Assembly of the Association of European Clubs (ECA) that he himself chairs.

“The new financial sustainability rules are a positive development,” he said. “But we need to be careful. Dangerous levels of debt and magical equity deals are not a sustainable path.” He also pointed to the fans needing to be respected.

In this sense, the PSG president was very sure that nobody will allow the European Super League to go ahead.

“We need to think of everyone, not just ourselves. The Super League was just about themselves,” he said, reiterating that he would “never” join this project.
