PSG’s double target: José Mourinho and Harry Kane
According to reports, Luis Campos could call on the Portuguese manager to succeed Galtier on the bench while the Spurs striker is a Qatari summer dream.
It’s clear that the ultimate objective of the new Paris Saint-Germain regime has not yet been achieved. Given the investment, European, and by extent world domination has faltered. But the project moves onto its next incarnation and the French club is gearing up for a summer that will be crucial for both its Qatari hierarchy and especially for Kylian Mbappé's future. The Frenchman’s contract expires in 2024, and failure to make the right moves in the transfer market could lead to his permanent departure from the club. Even the additional option to renew that he has until 2025, which can only be executed unilaterally by the player, would be lost in such a scenario.
Does Mourinho close Mbappé exit door?
The club’s sports management’s first major decision will be to find a new coach. Although Christophe Galtier saved his job until the end of the season with victories against Nice and Lens, he is expected to leave PSG this summer. And according to RMC Sport, Luis Campos is considering José Mourinho as his successor. He’ll certainly be good for headline making.
Campos and Mourinho have a good relationship, dating back to their time at Real Madrid ten years ago when Campos provided player reports to the now Roma boss. Mourinho is reportedly interested in taking over in Paris, and Campos sees him as the ideal coach to fix the lack of team unity and big egos that have plagued the squad in recent years.
Mourinho’s impressive track record and experience, which includes five European titles, including two Champions League victories, are two of the reasons why Campos likes the Portuguese coach. His arrival would give PSG a much-needed boost when it comes to competing at the highest level.
Harry Kane, priority to reinforce PSG attack
Right, so Mourinho for the bench, but what about another goal threat? Well, according to Le Parisien, Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur’s 29-year-old striker, is being closely monitored by PSG as they look to reinforce their attacking line. The outlet states that Luis Campos has identified Kane as his priority for the next market, as the Englishman’s contract is set to expire in just one year. Kane, who is yet to win a title as a professional, could be the striker that PSG needs to complete their dream attack. But we’ve said that before.
Mbappé, who wields such influence at the club, is said to have had issues playing as a pivot throughout the season, lacking a true number nine to enhance his already sizeable contribution. The French star even spoke to Robert Lewandowski to try to convince him to join PSG, but the Polish striker had already made the decision to sign for Barcelona. Kane’s potential arrival could solve this problem, as pairing him with Mbappé would give the Frenchman the support he needs to showcase his talent and potentially renew his contract.
Although Kane is the priority target, PSG is also monitoring other attackers such as Randal Kolo Muani from Eintracht and Victor Osimhen, although the competition with Bayern Munich and other elite clubs is fierce. PSG may also have the opportunity to sign Marcus Thuram, who will be a free agent in the next market, as confirmed by Gladbach’s sports director. With sufficient financial means to undertake the operation and having respected the Financial Fair-Play, an intense summer awaits PSG both internally and in terms of transfers.
