After a ten-month, 16-game winless streak away from home, Pumas were finally victorious on the road when they beat Mazatlán in the Liga MX on Friday. Goals by Eduardo Salvio and Juan Ignacio Dinenno earned Los Auriazules a 2-1 triumph that provisionally takes them ninth in the Clausura 2023 regular-season standings.

Until their win at the Estadio de Mazatlán, Pumas had registered six draws and 10 losses away from home since defeating Juárez 1-0 in April 2022, courtesy of a strike by Diogo de Oliveira.

How Pumas’ winless away run played out

The negative away sequence began on matchday 13 of the Clausura 2022, when the seven-time Mexican champions drew 2-2 with Puebla. They then lost 2-0 to Santos Laguna two weeks later, were beaten 3-1 at Chivas on matchday 16, and succumbed to Los Rojiblancos once more in the preliminary playoff round, suffering a 4-1 thrashing.

In the Apertura 2022 tournament, Pumas drew 3-3 away to León on matchday three, played out a goalless stalemate with Pachuca in the following round of fixtures, lost 2-1 to Puebla on matchday seven, and went down 3-2 to Santos on matchday nine. In week 11, Chivas beat Pumas 3-1, and in their next Liga MX outing Los Universitarios drew 0-0 with Atlas. On matchday 14, Pumas also had to settle for a point on their travels, drawing 2-2 with Toluca, and in week 17 they lost 2-1 to Juárez.

Until Friday, three defeats and a draw on the road in Clausura 2023

In the current Liga MX tournament, Rafael Puente del Río’s men opened up with a 3-0 reverse away to Santos, drew 0-0 with Tijuana on matchday four and were on the end of a 4-2 defeat at Tigres on matchday six. Pumas then lost 3-1 at Necaxa 10 days ago, before finally getting three away points on the board this week.

Pumas’ triumph over Mazatlán also ends a home-and-away run of three straight defeats in the Clausura 2023.
