Pumas break 12-year Tigres curse
A first-half strike ends a decade-long drought in Monterrey and gives Pumas a statement win early in the Clausura 2026.

Pumas UNAM pulled off one of their most significant wins in recent years, edging Tigres 1–0 at the Estadio Universitario in Nuevo León to end a 12-year winless run in San Nicolás that included 10 losses and six draws.
The game, part of Matchday 2 of the Clausura 2026, served as a statement result for the side coached by Efraín Juárez, who arrived under scrutiny after opening the tournament with a 1–1 draw against Querétaro. Winning at one of Liga MX’s most daunting venues gave the performance added weight.
The decisive goal came from Paraguayan forward Robert Morales, one of Pumas’ new signings for the semester, who finished off a flowing team move in the first half to secure a victory that went far beyond three points.

A drought that seemed endless at the Estadio Universitario
The last time Pumas UNAM had won away to Tigres UANL was January 25, 2014, when they prevailed 2–1 in the Clausura thanks to a brace from Martín Bravo. From that night on, the capital club endured years of frustrating visits to what is widely known as “El Volcán.”
Adding a symbolic twist, Tigres’ lone goal in that 2014 match was scored by Guido Pizarro, who is now the head coach of the UANL side — a detail that underscores the significance of this Clausura 2026 result.
Only the third Pumas win in Tigres’ home in 20 years
The numbers highlight just how rare this outcome is: it was only Pumas’ third away win over Tigres in the past two decades. Over that span, the balance had been overwhelmingly in favor of the Monterrey club, cementing the Estadio Universitario as one of the toughest grounds for the auriazules.
Breaking that pattern makes this victory one of the most meaningful for Pumas in the last decade — not only because of the opponent, but because of the heavy historical burden attached to the statistic.
