Pumas could appoint Jaime Lozano as new head coach
Pumas could make a move to Lozano as soon as his departure from Necaxa is confirmed.
Universidad Nacional want a head coach who knows the club inside-out to replace Andres Lillini. Ricardo Ferretti is the main candidate, along with Guillermo Vázquez as assistant coach at the time of writing, but Jaime Lozano is also an option.
The imminent departure of Lozano from Los Rayos would have changed the plans of the board headed by Miguel Mejia Baron and the board of directors. With one more option on the table, Universidad Nacional will evaluate both Ferretti’s and Lozano’s projects to make a decision.
Different generations
While Ferretti and Vázquez have all the experience in Mexican football, Lozano is only starting out. He is just starting his journey in Liga MX but already has an Olympic bronze medal as coach of Mexico (Tokyo 2020). Ferretti and Vázquez were the last two coaches who led the club to glory (2009 and 2011 respectively).
On the other hand, Lozano has just taken Necaxa to the playoffs of the Apertura 2022, although they lost 2-0 to Tigres UANL. The Pumas board will have to take the right decision in preparation for the Clausura 2023 after this season’s failure.
