Pumas make audacious bid to entice Keylor Navas

UNAM have already contacted the Costa Rican goalkeeper, with the aim of bringing him on board for the Apertura 2025 campaign.

Pumas UNAM is shaping up for what could be one of the most exciting transfer windows in its history. The headline-grabbing arrival of Aaron Ramsey, former Arsenal and Juventus star, is just the beginning. The Welsh international signed a one-year deal after leaving Cardiff City, making history as one of the first high-profile British players to join Liga MX.

With Alex Padilla returning to Athletic Club, after the Basque club triggered a buy-back clause, Pumas is actively scouting top-tier replacements. According to transfer expert César Luis Merlo, the club is eyeing two high-caliber goalkeepers to fill the void left by Padilla’s departure.

Keylor Navas, Pumas’ preferred choice

Pumas officially reached out to Keylor Navas’ camp, initiating early negotiations to bring the legendary Costa Rican goalkeeper to Liga MX. The move would be a blockbuster follow-up to the recent signing of Ramsey. However, there’s a major hurdle... Navas is under contract with Newell’s Old Boys until December 2026, and the Argentine club has no intention of letting him go easily.

At this point, the ball is in Navas’ court. According to reports, Pumas expects a response from the player’s side within the next few hours. If Navas signals interest, the club may move forward with a formal offer—but without a release clause in his contract, any deal would require Newell’s full cooperation and that seems unlikely to happen.

Ospina a possibility

Meanwhile, David Ospina has emerged as a strong alternative. The 36-year-old Colombian keeper may have an edge over Navas—not just because he’s two years younger, but because of his past connection with Pumas head coach Efraín Juárez, who managed him at Atlético Nacional. Add to that his former Arsenal teammate Aaron Ramsey, and you’ve got a compelling case for chemistry both on and off the pitch.

Ospina is currently under contract with Atlético Nacional through mid-2026, but his situation is reportedly more flexible. He’s already expressed interest in rejoining international competition, and his transfer value is considered manageable for Pumas.

According to multiple reports, Colombian left-back Álvaro Angulo is on the verge of joining Pumas. The deal, which involves a swap with Ignacio Pussetto and a cash component of around $800,000, is nearly finalized. Angulo, who previously worked with head coach Efraín Juárez at Atlético Nacional, is expected to arrive in Mexico City this week to complete the move.

There are also rumors that Pumas are close to landing an international to fill the winner position. Watch this space.
