José Juan Macías stunned the soccer world this past February when he announced his retirement, shortly after Santos Laguna terminated his contract. But the shock didn’t last long - Macías soon revealed he was heading to Spain for a trial with Real Valladolid. That opportunity, however, didn’t pan out either, and the club ultimately decided to part ways with him.

While Macías himself hasn’t released an official statement, TUDN journalist Rodrigo Celorio reports that the striker is now close to joining Pumas for Liga MX’s Apertura 2025 tournament. Details remain scarce, but Celorio claims Macías is to arrive on a free transfer following his recent exit from Valladolid.

The next ‘Chicharito’

Macías was once hailed as the heir to Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández at Chivas Guadalajara, thanks to his standout performances with the first team. Former manager Matías Almeyda spotted his talent early in the youth ranks and promoted him to the senior squad, where Macías quickly made a name for himself as a prolific goal scorer.

In 2018, he moved to León, where he continued his impressive form. Though the team didn’t win a title during his stint, Macías’ goal-scoring prowess earned him a call-up to the Mexican national team.

León ultimately didn’t exercise their purchase option, and Macías returned to Chivas. His time there was brief, as Spanish side Getafe took him to LaLiga on loan. Seven months later, he was back in Mexico with Chivas, but his second spell didn’t live up to expectations, and the club eventually terminated his contract.
