Qatar takes a big step toward resolving Spain vs Argentina Finalissima uncertainty
Domestic soccer resumes under heightened security, signaling progress as UEFA and CONMEBOL weigh whether Doha can still host the March 27 match.

Soccer will return to Qatar on Thursday in what appears to be a tentative step toward normalcy. The move could help stabilize plans to stage the Finalissima in Doha on March 27, exactly as originally scheduled.
Domestic competitions across the country are set to resume this week, including the Qatar Stars League. Three matches have already been rescheduled for Thursday. Clubs began training again Saturday, though teams are operating under heightened security measures amid ongoing tensions in the region.
Domestic soccer resumes amid heightened security
While the situation remains fluid, the restart of national competitions is being viewed as an important signal. Authorities have allowed teams to return to training facilities and stadiums, but with strict precautions in place.
Players and staff are reportedly following enhanced safety protocols as organizers monitor developments closely.
Finalissima host city still undecided
For now, Doha remains the official host city for the Finalissima, the one-off match between the champions of Europe and South America. In this case, that means Spain and Argentina.
Several alternative venues had been mentioned in recent days, but both CONMEBOL and UEFA quickly moved to shut down speculation. In a joint statement, the two governing bodies said a final decision on the venue will be made later this week.
The delay appears to be a deliberate attempt to buy time while officials assess the security situation.
Regional tensions complicate the decision
Qatar has been on alert amid threats of Iranian drone and missile attacks across the region. Iranian officials said two days ago that neighboring countries would not be targeted, but the situation remains uncertain.
Still, there are signs of gradual stabilization. Airspace restrictions have begun to ease, and the return of domestic soccer competitions suggests authorities believe conditions may allow major sporting events to proceed.
If that trend continues, Qatar could still host the Finalissima along with the five other matches scheduled as part of the Qatar Football Festival, just as originally planned.
