Ecuador were the last team to officially announce their squad list for Qatar 2022, leaving it almost to the last minute and annoyingly, teasing followers on Twitter for several hours with a series of cryptic messages.
Gustavo Alfaro finally confirmed his squad shortly before 6 p.m. local time on Monday 14 November - the deadline for all squad list to be submitted to FIFA. The announcement came via a two-minute video posted on social media.
Alfaro named a squad heavy in defence and midfield but with just four forwards. There was no place for Inter Miami’s Leonardo Campana or Independiente midfielder Junior Sornoza in the 26-man list. And there was heartbreak for Byron Castillo, injured just a couple of days ago in the friendly against Irak. His place in the squad has been filled by William Pacho.
