Qatar World Cup 2022: Ecuador national team roster | Selected players and omissions
We take a look at Ecuador’s national team roster for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Every player on the squad, the full calendar and group rivals.
Ecuador, who along with hosts Qatar will be the first teams in action at the 2022 World Cup starring in Sunday’s inaugural match, were the last to officially announce their squad list. Head coach Gustavo Alfaro finally confirmed his squad shortly before 6 p.m. local time on Monday 14 November - the deadline for all squad lists to be submitted to FIFA. The announcement came via a two-minute video posted on social media.
Alfaro named a squad heavy in defence and midfield but with just four forwards. There was no place for Inter Miami’s Leonardo Campana or Independiente midfielder Junior Sornoza in the 26-man list. And there was heartbreak for Byron Castillo, injured just a couple of days ago in the friendly against Irak, he was left out as a precaution following a dispute involving Chile over his nationality during the qualifying round. His place in the squad has been filled by William Pacho.
