Querétaro, a thorn in América’s side at the Azteca
In the last 10 games at the Coloso de Santa Úrsula, both clubs share the same number of victories.
On paper, América’s record against Querétaro at the Azteca makes impressive reading but during the last ten years that distance between both teams has been shortened. To such a degree that from the Clausura 2014 to the present day, the balance could not be more even - both teams have the same number of victories - three each, with the four games ending in a draw.
Results during the last 10 years
A clearer idea about how much that distance at the Coloso de Santa Úrsula has been reduced can be found in the close scorelines over the past decade. The Águilas beat Querétaro 2-1 in the Clausura 2021, 2-0 in the Clausura 2019 and 1-0 in the Clausura 2017.
In three years, América have not managed to beat Querétaro at their own stadium - something that they will be trying to put right when the two teams meet later today in Week 2 of the Clausura 2024.
Querétaro have become such a thorn in América’s side that, since the Winter 1996, when the short tournament format was adopted, the Coapa side has a balance of 13 wins and three defeats in Liga MX games played at the Azteca.
The Gallos Blancos’ most recent victories occurred in the Apertura 2017 when they beat the Águilas 0-1, in the Apertura 2015 with the same score and perhaps the most spectacular result was in the Clausura 2015 when they defeated the Coapa team 0-4 with goals from Yasser Corona, Orbelín Pineda and two from Brazilian star Ronaldinho - during a tournament in which they reached the grand final only to lose to Santos Laguna.
Finally, the four draws that have been recorded in Azteca are: 0-0 in the Clausura 2023 tournament, in the Clausura 2022 with a score of 1-1, in the Apertura 2019 (2-2) and finally in the Clausura 2014 which ended without goals.
